Omicron 'poses a real threat', says Moderna chief

In the UK, Dr Paul Burton, chief medical officer at Moderna, has been speaking to MPs on the Commons science and technology committee.

Burton said he expects data in the coming days to show how well the Moderna booster improves protection against the Omicron variant.

He cautioned against claims, largely from South Africa, that the variant is causing milder disease, and warned that Omicron and Delta are likely to circulate together for some time.

“I do not think Omicron is a milder, less severe version of the current virus,” he told the committee.

He added:

The idea it will push Delta out of the way and take over may occur in the future, but I think in the coming months these two viruses are going to co-exist, and Omicron, which I would maintain is actually a severe disease, will now infect people on a background of very, very strong Delta pressure.

It will also lead to a situation where individuals will become co-infected … which gives the opportunity for this virus to further evolve and mutate which is a concerning and worrying situation.

We certainly don’t have to panic, we have many many tools at our disposal, we’ve learnt so much about this virus over the last two years, and we can continue to fight it, but I think Omicron poses a real threat.

When you look at the data in SA about 15% of people who are hospitalised are in the intensive care unit, and while there’s variability, if you look back earlier in the year, at a time of delta surge in August, those numbers are about the same, 15%.

So while the mortality rate we are seeing right now is mercifully lower, I think as a disease it is a very fit virus and it’s severe.

Investors and funds are underestimating the omicron severity even as governments are stepping up to manage the onslaught.
Boosters can help? Sure.. but many countries have not even complete thrir 2nd jabs. Boosters will be given to much smaller groups.

Pfizer 3 doses is 70% efficacy to Omicron. 30% masuk hospital
Pfizer 2 dose is 20-25% efficacy to Omicron

Put it another way, 3 dose of pfizer offers less protection to Omicron than 2 doses pfizer to Delta. Omicron 70% vs Delta 85%

No idea how long that protection will last but it will be less than 6 months.

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission this month finalized rules to implement a law that would allow the market regulator to ban foreign companies listed in the U.S. from trading if their auditors do not comply with requests for information from American regulators.

The law was passed in 2020 after Chinese regulators repeatedly denied requests from the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board to inspect the audits of Chinese firms that list and trade in the United States.

Given the current level of distrust between the U.S. and Chinese governments, and with the bilateral relationship unlikely to improve anytime soon, there is “no way we are going to solve this in the next few years,” Loevinger said.

A new super-variant could be created if Omicron and Delta infect someone at the same time, one of Moderna's bosses has warned.

Covid infections normally only involve one mutant strain, but in extremely rare cases two can strike at the same time.

If these also infect the same cell, they may be able to swap DNA and combine to make a new version of the virus.

Dr Paul Burton, the vaccine maker's chief medical officer, warned the high numbers of Delta and Omicron cases currently circulating in Britain made this more likely.

how do Delta and Omicron combine? Viruses reproduce a$exually. Omicron will just overtake Delta to become dominant strain because it's much more transmissible, but since Omicron has much lower virulence, it will cause much lower admission rate than Delta (more than 70% of omicron patients in south africa were incidental findings because of the hospital mandatory tests, meaning they were admitted due to other reasons). Its bad news for glove fanatics. The current higher admission rate is just temporary, once people get herd immunity by natural infections which will be formed really fast due to its transmissibility, it will be the death of glove industry. Yes, lots and lots of people already got infected by omicron and recovered without knowing it. Stop saying BS just because you bought glove stock recently. lol

The World Health Organization on Wednesday cautioned against treating the Covid omicron variant as a mild strain, warning that the virus will also cause severe illness.

“We know that people infected with omicron can have the full spectrum of disease, from asymptomatic infection to mild disease, all the way to severe disease to death,” Maria Van Kerkhove, the WHO’s Covid-19 technical lead, told the public during a question-and-answer session.

The WHO warned on Tuesday that omicron is spreading faster than any previous variant. Van Kerkhove said Wednesday that increased transmission will result in more hospitalizations that burden health-care systems, some of which will fail.

Public health officials have warned for weeks that the U.S. would face another Covid wave due to the delta variant this winter.
