PETALING JAYA: The crime index in Selangor saw an increase of 5.84% last year, recording a total of 13,740 cases, says Selangor police chief Comm Datuk Hussein Omar Khan. He said this was 758 cases more than the 12,982 recorded in 2022.

“Violent crimes recorded a 5.92% increase last year while crimes involving valuables also spiked 5.82%,” he said.

On the war on drugs, Comm Hussein said a total of 18,931 drug cases were recorded in Selangor last year.

“We also arrested 22,981 individuals and seized drugs worth RM154.5mil. The number of cases increased by 1,940 while the number of those detained increased by 817 compared to 2022,” he said.

A total of 5,753 commercial crime cases were recorded last year.

“Majority of the cases were scams, including love scams, loan scams and financial fraud. In 2022, 2,860 commercial crime cases were recorded, showing a double spike last year or a 101% increase in such cases,” he said.

On a separate matter, Comm Hussein said no one has come forward with information in connection with the murder of six-year-old autistic boy Zayn Rayyan Abdul Matiin, despite a RM20,000 reward.

“We are still waiting for people to come forward. Nonetheless, we will never give up as we are still investigating the case. We will give an update if there is any new development,” he told a press conference after witnessing the handing over ceremony for the Petaling Jaya OCPD post yesterday.

It was reported that Selangor MCPF offered the RM20,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of Zayn Rayyan’s killer.

On Dec 5, the six-year-old autistic boy was reported missing in Damansara Damai and was found dead near a stream about 200m from his home at Apartment Idaman the next day. A post-mortem revealed injuries to his neck and body, leading to the conclusion that he had been killed.
