Vigneswaran re-elected unopposed as MIC president for third term

KUALA LUMPUR: Tan Sri S.A Vigneswaran has returned unopposed as the MIC president for the 2024-2027 term after nomination for the party's presidential election closed at noon today.

This will be the third term the former Dewan Negara president is serving the post since he was appointed to the position in July 2018.

It was revealed that Vigneswaran, who was previously the Kota Raja member of Parliament, was the only party member to submit his nomination form for the people before the deadline today.

Vigneswaran's return to the post was announced by MIC deputy president and Tapah MP Datuk Seri M Saravanan at the party's headquarters here today.

"Tan Sri (Vigneswaran) retained the MIC presidency for a third consecutive term after the party presidential nomination closed at the party headquarters at noon today," he wrote in a post on his Facebook today.

Saravanan, who is the former human resources minister, added that MIC was now more united than ever and forward looking.

"Apart from championing the fate of the community, MIC is the only Indian-based party in the country which places high commitments on the welfare and education of the Indian community," he said.

Saravanan was previously quoted as saying that MIC would be holding its presidential election for the 2024 -2027 term on April 12.

In a report by Bernama, Saravanan had said an election must be held before the president's term ends. According to the party's constitution, the term of the MIC president ends on May 25.
