BARIO: The Sarawak government has approved the construction of a raw water retention pond in Bario to bolster the water supply in the region, the Sarawak Public Communications Unit reported.

Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier's Office (Labour, Immigration, and Project Monitoring) Datuk Gerawat Gala said the new infrastructure is part of the phase to improve the treated water plant in Bario.

During a press meet while visiting Bario on Monday, Gerawat highlighted the necessity of the pond, noting that the current water intake point from the Depur River is prone to sand filling during floods, which hampers water suction.

"The raw water pond will ensure a continuous water supply for approximately two weeks for the 14 longhouses served by this plant," he said.

In addition to the water project, Gerawat, who is also the Mulu assemblyman, conducted an inspection of the Bario waste disposal site, highlighting the efficiency of the Asher machine system in waste management.

He said this system is advantageous as it requires less space and emits only steam, thus preventing air pollution.
