KUALA LUMPUR: The Health Ministry attributed the sale of a contaminated murtabak, which went viral for having a dirty rag inside, to improper use of protective attire as well as failure to segregate raw and cooked food.

In a press statement, the ministry said authorities have issued one compound notice under Regulation 32(1)(b) of the Food Hygiene Regulations 2009 under investigations through the Food Safety and Quality Programme (PKKM).

The negligence in food safety practices of the operator selling the food item at the Desa Pandan Ramadan Bazaar in Kuala Lumpur prompted authorities to launch a thorough investigation into practices of the entire bazaar operations.

"The ministry consistently monitors and inspects all Ramadan bazaar stalls nationwide. To date, a total of 10,570 Ramadan bazaar premises have been inspected.

"Food traders found not complying with the requirements under the Food Act 1983 and its regulations can be subject to fines not exceeding RM 100,000 or imprisonment not exceeding 10 years or both."

The ministry also advised the public to prioritise food safety throughout Ramadan in choosing any breaking-of-fast dishes with the "Observe and Choose" practice.

"The see, smell, taste (if possible) method is the easiest way to prevent food poisoning.

"If consumers have any concerns regarding food safety issues, they can contact any district health office, the nearest State Health Department or visit our website and social media accounts."
