PUTRAJAYA: The Communications Ministry is exploring the possibility of offering tax waivers to organisers of major international events, taking a cue from Thailand's approach.

The ministry is proposing similar incentives, known as the Concerts and Events in Malaysia Incentive, modelled after the previous Film in Malaysia Incentive.

He said this effort would require his ministry to collaborate with the Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry, and Finance Ministry.

"The collaborative efforts aim to determine what kind of incentives we can provide, as it is not just about rebates.

"It is also about making the process smoother, easier, and faster, while ensuring that facilities are sufficient for the kinds of events we would like to attract," he told reporters at the National News Agency (Bernama) corporate social responsibility event here today.

Yesterday, Reuters reported that Thailand announced a tax waiver for organisers of large international concerts, sporting events, and festivals to attract big events and position itself as a regional tourism hub.

The Board of Investment will grant organisers of large international events requiring an investment of at least 100 million baht, an import duty exemption on equipment and facilitate the temporary entry of required foreign staff.

Following today's Cabinet meeting, Fahmi said the Cabinet is currently reviewing suggestions on constituency allocations.

He said the next step involves presenting these suggestions to the unity government council, which includes heads of component parties.

"If discussions with the opposition proceed smoothly, they will be brought back to the Cabinet for further discussion," he said.
