MCA has to make a decision on whether they want to continue being a part of the unity government, said UMNO Supreme Council member Datuk Lokman Noor Adam.

This is following the Barisan Nasional component party’s decision to not campaign for a Pakatan Harapan candidate in the forthcoming Kuala Kubu Baharu (KKB) by-election on May 11, reported Malaysiakini.

“When we (BN) decide to be in a team, we must show that we are a team player. If they (MCA) want to be treated fairly, they must also contribute to strengthening the unity government.

“I believe MCA has to make a decision on whether they want to continue being a part of the unity government or be wherever else they want to be,” Lokman was reported as saying by the news portal after attending the government’ candidate unveiling ceremony at Taman Gamelan in Kuala Kubu Baharu on Wednesday (April 24) night.

Recall that MCA president Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong had recently questioned the need for his party to assist DAP in the upcoming KKB polls as the latter had often insulted them.

Taking the matter to TikTok, Wee said that given DAP’s long record of insulting his party, he doubted that MCA should assist DAP.

In the video, Wee further noted that when DAP had criticised MCA, they do it as they please with “much hatred”, and raised the question about the need for MCA to be the “bigger person”.

Wee further shared a short clip of DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke Siew Fook saying that he does not like MCA and called the party a “taukeh party” that is only for the rich and people with positions.

On this issue, Lokman further pointed out that MCA should not get offended by criticisms hurled at the party

“We understand if they feel slighted but in politics, one should not be so easily offended. In politics, we often criticise others, so we must be willing to accept criticisms. Don’t always think about yourself,” he added.

BN deputy chairman Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan recently said that BN component parties are required to help the government candidate in the KKB by-election.

Last night, DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke Siew Fook announced that Pang Sock Tao, who is also the press secretary to Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming, as PH’s candidate for the seat.

Pang had been chosen as the candidate for the by-election triggered by the death of its incumbent Lee Kee Hiong on March 21.

In the Selangor state election last year, Lee helped DAP to retain KKB after she polled a majority of 4,119 votes in a four-cornered fight.

Kuala Kubu Baharu, a seat in the Selangor state assembly, has a mixed electorate, with Malay voters comprising 46%, Chinese (30%), Indian (18%) and others (5%). - April 25, 2024
