PUTRAJAYA: The memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the unity government and opposition is vital to ensure the nation's development and to safeguard the people's wellbeing.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said while the document was "not necessary", it would affirm the cooperation between the parties for the benefit of the people.

"We're currently drafting the MoU so that we would have a joint agenda in developing the country, restore the economy and most importantly, safeguard the wellbeing of the people in terms of stability and peace. They're of upmost importance," he told reporters at his Hari Raya Aidilfitri open house here today.

He, however did not specify any timeline for the draft agreement to be completed and presented to the opposition.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim attended the same open house event. He was received by Fadillah, who is Energy Transition and Public Utilities Minister.

Guests were also entertained by Raya song performances at the open house which saw various traditional delicacies served such as rendang and ketupat palas.

Perikatan Nasional chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin recently criticised the government over allocations for opposition members of parliament, saying that he provided funds to opposition MPs during his tenure as the prime minister.

He said the party will assess first if there are any conditions, so as not to bind opposition MPs.
