KOTA KINABALU: Opposition assemblymen can ask for development funds directly from the state government if there is a pressing need, says Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor.

He said the administration would always give top priority to the welfare of the people in the state.

“The state does not sideline districts or areas held by the Opposition leaders,” he said at the state assembly sitting here yesterday.

“In fact, there are allocations given to these areas directly via the district offices.

“But if there are other pressing needs for the people, Opposition leaders can apply from us (me) directly and we can consider as long as it is for the people,” Hajiji said in reply to Moyog assemblyman Datuk Darell Leiking from Warisan.

Later, his colleague, Senallang assemblyman Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal, asked why there were no updates to federal funds that were applied for by state Opposition leaders.

“If the funds are approved and have been channelled, why are we (Opposition leaders) not informed?” he said.

Warisan is the Opposition in Sabah but is aligned to the unity government at the federal level.

Hajiji replied that he was unaware of some details on whether the funds were given out or not.

“I think there are some shortcomings on the part of district officials or the state development offices.

“We will take note and improve on this,” he added.

He also instructed the state secretary to inform all local leaders and district officers about this matter.
