KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia and China have reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthening practical maritime cooperation between the two countries.

The matter was agreed upon during the bilateral dialogue between Malaysia and China on the management of maritime issues in the South China Sea hosted by the Malaysian National Security Council in Langkawi on Oct 16.

The bilateral dialogue was held pursuant to the joint statement between China and Malaysia on deepening the comprehensive strategic partnership towards China-Malaysia community with a shared future adopted during Chinese Premier Li Qiang's official visit to Malaysia in June.

"During this bilateral dialogue, both sides emphasised the strong relations between them. Both sides also exchanged views on current maritime and related issues.

"They also reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthen practical maritime cooperation," the National Security Council said in a statement yesterday.

The bilateral dialogue was co-chaired by the council's director-general Datuk Raja Nushirwan Zainal Abidin and China's Vice Foreign Minister Chen Xiaodong.

The dialogue was also attended by representatives from relevant ministries and agencies.
