Dato' Sri Dr. Hou Kok Chung served at University of Malaya from 1991 to 2008 as a lecturer and lastly as Associate Professor. During his tenure in the university, he had been appointed and held position as Head of Department of East Asian Studies and Director of Institute of China Studies. He was a Member of Parliament and the Deputy Minister of Higher Education Malaysia from 2008 to 2013. He was a member of the Senate in the Parliament of Malaysia from 2014 to 2018. He was the Chairman of the Institute of Strategic Analysis & Policy Research from 2014 to 2018 focusing on political-economic research. He was the Chairman of Melaka Port Authority from 2017 to 2018.

Presently, Dato' Sri Dr. Hou Kok Chung is a Non-Executive Director of Parkson Retail Group Limited and Independent Non-Executive Director of Furniweb Holdings Limited, both are public listed company on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. He is also the Deputy Chairman of the Board of Governors of Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology since 2014.
