He began his career in the education field as a lecturer at Universiti Pertanian Malaysia in 1982 and was active in various research and development activities. He was awarded research grants from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Vienna, and the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial research Organisation (CSIRO), Australia and was later appointed as expert for Africa and South East Asia by the IAEA. He left the academic field for the corporate environment to join Schmidt Scientific Sdn. Bhd. in 1989 and successfully restructured their Biomedical business in Malaysia and was subsequently appointed as Executive Director of Schmidt Vietnam Co Ltd where he eventually became the Regional Managing Director in 1999. He was also the Chief Executive Officer of Schmidt BioMedTech Asia Ltd., a multinational company with a presence in over ten countries in Asia.
