Tan Sri Azman graduated with a first class honours degree in Economics from the London School of Economics and Political Science and is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales and the Malaysian Institute of Accountants, and a fellow member of the Malaysian Institute of Banks.
Working Experience
Tan Sri Azman started his career at KPMG in London before returning to Malaysia in 1988 where he built his career in investment banking to become the Chief Executive of Amanah Merchant Bank. During the Asian Financial Crisis in 1998, Tan Sri Azman was appointed by the Malaysian Government to set-up and head Danaharta, the national asset management company and subsequently became its chairman until 2003. He was also the Chairman of the Corporate Debt Restructuring Committee (CDRC) which was set-up by Bank Negara Malaysia to mediate and assist in the debt restructuring of viable companies until its closure in 2002. These two entities were set-up to assist the financial and corporate sectors in managing the crisis, and both were successful in their missions leading to their closure after the crisis. In 2002, he returned to the private sector and founded Symphony House Sdn Bhd (formerly known as Symphony House Berhad). He is currently the Executive Chairman of Symphony Life Berhad and the Chairman of Ranhill Holdings Berhad. He also sits on the board of AIA Group Limited, listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. Outside his professional engagements, Tan Sri Azman is active in public service and sits on the boards of Khazanah Nasional Berhad, Ekuiti Nasional Berhad, Sepang International Circuit Sdn Bhd and the Chairman of Motorsports Association of Malaysia. Tan Sri Azman serves as a member of the Capital Market Advisory Group of Securities Commission Malaysia and the Malaysia Special Economic Committee.
