Datuk Mariati started her career in the State Attorney General Chambers of Sabah in 1977 before moving to various private practice. She held the post of State Attorney General of Sabah between 2013 and 2017 before returning to private practice until her retirement in 2020.
She was the Chairperson of Majlis Penasihat Wanita Negeri Sabah (MPWS), the state advisory body on women empowerment under the Sabah Ministry of Community Development and Peoples Wellbeing, between 2012 and 2016. She ceased to be a committee member of MPWS on 31 December 2020.
She was an Independent Non-Executive Director and member of the Audit Committee and Nomination Committee of Innoprise Plantations Berhad (formerly known as Sinora Industries Berhad) between 1996 and 2014.
