YB Datuk S. Abas Bin S. Ali was the Chairman of Warisan Harta Sabah Sdn Bhd before his appointment as the Speaker of Sabah State Legislative Assembly.
He began his career with the Sabah State Civil Service in 1976 as the Development Officer (Division 1) under the Ministry of Industrial Development where he served until 1978.
From 1979 until 1981, he served as the State Assemblyman for Balung constituency (N.47) of Tawau and between 1981 to 1985, he was appointed as a Political Secretary.
In 1985, he was appointed as the Deputy Chairman of the Sabah Ports Authority (SPA) and in the following year (1986) he became the Chairman of Ko-Nelayan Sabah.
Between 1986 to 1990 he sat on the Board of Sabah Finance Berhad.
In 1990, he served as the Chairman of SAMA (Sabah Marketing) group of companies until 1992.
In 2004, he was again elected as the State Assemblyman for Balung (N.55) Tawau and by virtue thereof was appointed as the Chairman of Majlis Ugama Islam Sabah (MUIS) until 2010.
In May 2013, he was re-elected as the Assemblyman for Balung, Tawau.
