Datuk Anuar started his career in 1977 with Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS). During his 36 years of services with PETRONAS Group, he held various senior managerial and leadership positions in marketing, trading, corporate planning and human resource management until his retirement in April 2014 where his last position held was the Executive Vice President of Gas and Power Business, PETRONAS.
During his stint with PETRONAS Group, he was appointed as the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer in PETRONAS Dagangan Berhad from 1998 to 2002. He was also a member of PETRONAS Management Committee and member of PETRONAS Board from 2002 to April 2014. He also sat on the board of various companies within PETRONAS Group. In 1997, between his years of service with PETRONAS Group, he underwent a 3-month business management course under the Advance Management Program at Harvard Business School.
