Saying education is for all, minister tells states to budget for extra STEM classes

GEORGE TOWN, Aug 27 — Education Minister Maszlee Malik today urged state governments to set aside funds in their respective 2020 budget for extra classes on science, technology, English and mathematics (STEM) subjects in primary schools.

Streamless classes from next year onwards

FRANKFURT: From next year, the streamless schools approach will be implemented.

Education Minister Dr Maszlee Malik said secondary students would be able to choose what subjects they want to study.

The streaming in Form Four is ridiculous, he said, as it resulted in many students who were born to be scientists ending up in arts, and those who did not want to be in that stream ending up in Science.

"So starting next year, science and arts students can choose and combine the subjects they like. I'm pushing for it.

"Big data will guide them in making the decisions themselves, not parents.

"Many parents make their children pursue their own dreams, which is not right," he said, adding that currently, students go into Science, Accounting or Arts depending on their results.

"The really good ones will go to Science while the less good ones will go to Arts. Am I right?

"That's why there's a mismatch."

He said that a similar approach, where big data would guide students in choosing their higher education courses, would be implemented.

Maszlee, who is on a working visit to Germany, was speaking during a meet-and-greet session with members of the Malaysian community in Germany on Oct 14.

Dr M: Malaysia aims to be South-East Asia's Industry 4.0 hub

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia is targeting to be an Industry 4.0 hub in South-East Asia to regain its status as an Asian Tiger.

The Malaysian education system is currently being aligned to the economic needs of the nation, he noted.

"The focus on the teaching of industrial skills ought to be skewed towards innovative knowledge," he said.

There must be a push towards innovative thinking and multi-disciplinary knowledge, as Malaysia aimed to increase its high-skilled workforce from 18% to 35% by the year 2020.

Classroom of future goes digital

AN ELECTRONICS company has envisioned a smart classroom with highly interactive lessons in the 21st century.
That was exactly what Sharp Electronics (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd demonstrated when it hosted Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Education Minister Dr Maszlee Malik at its smart interactive classroom in Penang.

Dr Mahathir was taken on a tour of the specially set-up classroom while Maszlee observed a group of tech-savvy preschoolers interact with an educational robot in the "smart kindergarten" area.



"They allow educators to present lessons in an engaging way to help improve retention and interest among students.

"This approach caters to a wide range of learning styles, be it visual, auditory, reading, writing or kinesthetic."

He said Sharp's smart technology would upgrade classrooms from traditional blackboards to screens free of chalk dust, which presented multiple functions for teaching and learning when paired with user-friendly teaching applications.

Those functions include quick answering, work comparing, screen broadcasting and brainstorming.

"The result is a highly engaged classroom where students play a more active role in taking ownership of their lessons and the overall learning process," added Wu.

Sharp recently announced its debut in the smart education solution sphere, through the signing of a memorandum of understanding with integrated education solutions provider Eduspec Holdings Berhad.

The partnership is poised to benefit local education sector as it aims to equip 100 classrooms across Malaysia with smart education solutions comprising advanced digital tools, software and interactive educational content, thus directly elevating the education experience in schools and campuses nationwide.

Ambassador of Uzbekistan to Malaysia Ravshan Usmanov discussed prospects for introducing innovative software solutions in general education institutions of Uzbekistan with the CEO of Eduspec Holdings Berhad, Een Hong Lim.

Innovative solutions such as Smart Schools using advanced technologies, digitalization of curricula, advanced training of teachers and introduction of practical classes in demanded specializations will improve the quality of system of acquiring knowledge.

The meeting was attended by H.E. Ravshan Usmanov the Ambassador of Uzbekistan and H.E. Bolat Imanbayev the Ambassador of Kazakhstan to Malaysia.
