PETALING JAYA: Our society needs a huge "spring cleaning" to curb social ills like money games, said MCA president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai during his Wesak Day speech.

"It cannot be denied that the negative culture of materialism has invaded our hearts.

"It is evident in the recent headline-grabbing issues related to unlawful ways of enriching oneself, such as money games," he said during his opening speech at Kwan Inn Teng temple on Wednesday morning.

Liow urged the public to be wary of money games, adding that the problem will not go away unless the society itself undergoes a “huge spring cleaning.”

"As Buddhists, we believe that accumulating material is part of life, but we should not allow ourselves to be consumed by greed. The result will be disastrous," he said.

Greed is one of the three unwholesome roots that Buddhists strive to eradicate.

Liow also stressed the importance of tolerance and understanding in Malaysia's multiracial and multi-religious society.

"We see the gradual creeping-in of religious and racial extremism. I hope Dhamma (the teachings of the Buddha) can help promote a united, harmonious and developed Malaysia," he said.

Before his speech, Liow, along with Kwan Inn Teng temple Superintendent the Venerable Ming Ji, participated in a Buddha-bathing tradition, a ceremony which signifies the purification of the mind and body.

For Buddhists, Wesak Day commemorates the birth, enlightenment and passing of the founder of the religion, Siddhartha Gautama.

Wesak Day is also known as “Buddha Day” and is observed by over five million followers in Malaysia.
