Russia is aiming to have a COVID-19 vaccine approved for public use by August 10, which would make it the first approved vaccine in the world, Russian officials told CNN.
Kirill Dmitriev, the head of Russia's sovereign wealth fund, compared the vaccine's quick development to Russia launching the first successful satellite in 1957, beating the US to it.
"It's a Sputnik moment," he said. "Americans were surprised when they heard Sputnik's beeping. It's the same with this vaccine. Russia will have got there first."

MSPI, which has been operating since 1979, is involved in manufacturing and supplying industrial-grade plastic products such as plastic pallets for businesses. More recently, the company has been moving into consumer products such as chairs and containers which are sold directly to consumers via online platforms.

The group is also looking to expand into the healthcare segment, according to Leong.

"At the moment, we are still in the preliminary stages of planning. However, we are excited to pursue new growth areas in healthcare. We are keen to pursue opportunities in the production of healthcare products," he said.

Asked if MSPI will be involved in the manufacturing of personal protective equipment, given the Covid-19 pandemic, Leong only said to wait for Mah Sing's announcement soon, although he did not give a timeline on when this announcement will be made.

MSPI is also looking to expand its Klang facility as well as set up logistic hubs in the southern and northern regions.

It is also going into the leasing business of plastic pallet rental, which will provide recurrent income.

The plastic business has continued to be a positive contributor to Mah Sing Group's revenue. For the financial year ended Dec 31, 2019, MSPI contributed RM327.1 million or 18.3% to the group's revenue.

At the midday break, Mah Sing rose 1.49% or one sen to 68 sen, with 10.2 million shares traded.

MAH Sing Group Berhad (Mah Sing) optimis meneroka peluang baharu dalam bidang kesihatan menerusi segmen pembuatan plastik.

Pengasas dan Pengarah Urusan Kumpulan, Tan Sri Leong Hoy Kum berkata, pihaknya kini dalam proses perancangan untuk melaksanakannya melalui anak syarikatnya, Mah Sing Plastics Industries Sdn Bhd (MSPI).


"Pada masa ini, kami dalam peringkat awal perancangan, tetapi teruja untuk merealisasikan peluang pertumbuhan baru dalam bidang kesihatan.

"Kami berhasrat menerokai peluang dalam pengeluaran produk penjagaan kesihatan dengan memanfaatkan rekod prestasi MSPI yang sudah terbukti selain kepakaran sebagai pengeluar plastik di Malaysia dalam perniagaan yang berpotensi ini.

"Dengan sumber dan kepakaran bahagian plastik sedia ada, kami optimis untuk usaha yang bermanfaat ini," katanya pada Lawatan Media ke MSPI di sini, semalam.

Leong berkata, segmen plastik terus memberikan sumbangan positif kepada prestasi syarikat dengan perolehan RM76.1 juta dan mencatatkan keuntungan operasi RM3.34 juta bagi suku berakhir 31 Mac tahun ini.

"Tahun lalu, segmen plastik menyumbang pendapatan RM327.1 juta atau 18.3 peratus kepada syarikat," katanya.

Bahagian plastik Mah Sing mempunyai operasi di Malaysia dan Indonesia dengan operasi di negara ini menerusi anak syarikat milik penuh kumpulan, sementara operasi di Indonesia adalah anak syarikat 65 peratus dengan pelanggannya merangkumi Panasonic, Daihatsu, Toyota, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Mercedes Benz dan Suzuki.
