Weak March 2016 air freight volumes point to another difficult year, says IATA

KUALA LUMPUR (May 5): Global air freight markets for March 2016 showed a 2.0% drop in volumes measured in freight tonne kilometers (FTKs) compared to the same period last year, according to the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

In a statement May 4, IATA said that in contrast, freight capacity (measured in available freight tonne kilometers or AFTKs) rose by 6.9%, putting increased pressure on already struggling yields.

It said the weak results reflect subdued growth in world trade, exaggerated by the comparison to a particularly strong start to 2015 when air freight volumes were boosted by the effects of the US West Coast seaports strike.

IATA said the most significant fall in demand was reported by carriers in Asia-Pacific and North America.

It said that combined, they accounted for around 60% of global freight traffic and reported declines of 5.2%, and 1.8%, respectively.

IATA director general and CEO Tony Tyler said it is shaping up to be another tough year for air cargo.

“February 2016 world trade volumes were only 0.4% higher than at the end of 2014. And the expectations of purchasing managers gives little optimism for an early uptick.

“The combination of fierce competition, capacity increases and stagnant demand makes this a very difficult environment in which to generate profits,” he said.

Warren Buffett said, through reading Annual Reports of the companies in the past, notice did management deliver what they promised? Did they admit their mistakes in the past? [If you look at the past few quarters results, AA suffered massive losses from USD loan! So did Tony admit the mistake? No loh!]

Warren Buffett uses Owner's earning instead of Net Profit to calculate real value of the company. Owner's earning is net profit add back depreciation and minus capital expenditure. Depreciation of AA is approximately 500-700 million a year, capital expenditure is about 1.6b. It's a big NO NO for Airasia if you consult Warren Buffett.

Zero Sum Game. If you add up all those investment put in the Malaysia airline industry and add up all the profit numbers made by airline companies, most likely you will get a big negative figure. Negative Sum Game in fact.

Hundreds of passengers fume after cancellations, delays ground AirAsia flights
BY JAMES SIVALINGAM - 1 MAY 2016 @ 11:51 AM

KUALA LUMPUR: Hundreds of AirAsia passengers were left fuming yesterday following a raft of flight cancellations and delays by the low-cost carrier.

It was understood that the flight cancellations and delays involved not only local destinations, but also those abroad.

Among the routes which experienced delays or cancellations yesterday included Hong Kong and some destinations in India.

One Facebook user Latha Ravi, took to social media to vent her frustration over her flight's cancellation.

According to her posting, AirAsia had only informed her about the cancellation three hours prior to the flight's scheduled depature.

“How are you going to compensate for loss of hotel night and stress of rebooking?” she asked.

Another user, Clementine Windisch said, “First they promise you to refund your money, then they do not respond on your requests anymore.

“No one feels responsible, it's an eternal circulation," said Windisch.

A similar situation had occurred in Decemberlast year, with a series of lengthy delays affecting AirAsia flights. The problem had been blamed on a "flu epidemic" which apparently saw 12 pilots take sick leave.

In a statement late last night, AirAsia confirmed that it had been experiencing flight disruptions.

However, the airline would not comment on the cause of the delays and cancellations.

"AirAsia confirms that we have been experiencing some flight disruptions since Saturday evening which had caused inconveniences to our guests.

"This is highly regretted and we are working to normalise our operations and reduce these disruptions.

All affected guests are being informed accordingly and necessary assistance are being provided.

AirAsia sincerely apologises for the inconveniences caused."
