Time to look to Asia for Covid-19 vaccines, says expert

A virologist believes Malaysia should look to Asia for Covid-19 vaccines as those developed in the west have been snapped up by richer countries.

Dr Lam Sai Kit said while it was admirable that Pfizer and BioNTech had produced a vaccine with high efficacy in record time, it would be difficult for Malaysia to access them due to strong competition.

Speaking to FMT, he said with the Covid-19 cases surging in the US and Europe as winter approaches, 80% of Pfizer’s vaccines have been sold to the richest governments around the world.

“China, which has several candidate vaccines in Phase Three clinical trials, and has been tested extensively in and outside of China, including Brazil, had promised to make their vaccine available globally when it is ready for application after the successful completion of the clinical trials,” he said.

“The King also welcomes the commitment given by the Chinese government to list Malaysia as the main recipient country of the Covid-19 vaccine they are developing, ” he added.

His Majesty said he hoped that the supply of Covid-19 vaccine to Malaysia could be accelerated and also be a catalyst for the expansion of scientific cooperation and collaboration between the two countries.

Malaysia has been listed as one of the countries to be given priority to receive the COVID-19 vaccine from China, which will be distributed soon, according to Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin.

In a Facebook post on Thursday (Nov 26), the prime minister said the assurance was conveyed to him by China’s outgoing ambassador to Malaysia, Bai Tian, during a farewell visit at the parliament building on Wednesday.

AstraZeneca Plc and the University of Oxford face mounting questions about their Covid-19 vaccine trial results after acknowledging a manufacturing error.

While an announcement earlier this week by Astra and Oxford showed their shot was 70% effective on average in a late-stage study, the scant details released by the U.K. partners have sparked worries, with some expressing doubts about whether U.S. regulators would clear it.

Astra and Oxford had said their vaccine was 90% effective when a half-dose was given before a full-dose booster. Two full doses showed an efficacy of 62%. But the head of the U.S. vaccine program known as Operation Warp Speed said the next day that the dose showing the higher level of effectiveness was tested in a younger population.

“The most likely explanation for the divergent efficacy in its interim analysis is either chance or patient demographics,” Sam Fazeli, a Bloomberg Intelligence analyst, wrote in a note. “Either way, approval based on current data means people will e inoculated with a vaccine the true efficacy of which is unknown.”

China’s Sinopharm Seeking Approval for COVID-19 Vaccine

In July, China’s National Medical Products Administration announced a new set of guidelines, aiming to fast-track drug review and approval processes. The regulation specifically said “breakthrough pharmaceuticals” and products that “prevent and treat major infectious diseases” would qualify for an EXPEDITED approval process, even if they had not completed late-stage human trials.

K-Star sees opportunity in distributing Covid-19 vaccines to private clinics

"For a start, we will be establishing a mobile sales and marketing team to approach the private clinics throughout Malaysia," KSS executive chairman Ding Jianpinghe said in a statement today.

KSS is an appointed sale agent to distribute Covid-19 vaccines by Kanger International Bhd (KIB) which has signed a collaboration agreement with China-based Sinopharm Group Hunan Changde Medical Co Ltd to distribute Covid-19 vaccines developed by China National Pharmaceutical Group Corporation (CNPG).

The key person who will be spearheading this initiative is KSS executive director Koo Kien Yoon, who had been the executive director of Biosis Group Bhd (BGB) from 2013 to 2016 where he spearheaded the sales, marketing and distribution of healthcare and pharmaceutical products for the company.

With his established business network as well as personal experience in the industry, KSS would be able to leverage on Koo's prior experience and knowledge to establish a leading market position in this business of distributing Covid-19 vaccines to private clinics in Malaysia.

As a sale agent, KSS would be handling the sales and marketing of the vaccines while KIB would be responsible for the purchasing and inventory holding of the vaccines.

"We are pleased to be working together with KIB on the distribution of Covid-19 vaccines by CNPG, one of China's leading vaccine producers.

Lol tomorrows budget vote is really 50/50. Hopefully Ahmad Martadha Mohamed, the professor from Utara Malaysia University is right ie the budget will be approved with a slim majority.

-----------
Malaysia's Government, Prime Minister Face Make-or-Break Budget Vote

UMNO has openly called for general elections once the pandemic is under control. But the holdouts may be keen to bring one on even sooner, confident in the party's chances of wresting control from Muhyiddin and Bersatu, said Ahmad Martadha Mohamed, a professor of government at Utara Malaysia University.

"They feel that if there is a new election UMNO can contest in more seats, especially seats that were taken by Bersatu; they want the seats back and they feel that they have the support," he said.

Ahmad believes the budget is LIKELY TO SQUEAK BY but still sees a chance that it could fail.

@okschoon Most probably due to PP. Now that PP is complete and after budget is approved tomorrow, hopefully it will start to go up. Once, Sinopharm vaccine is approved it will move up much more.. Anyway this is long term stock for me due to the bamboo business. Vaccine is just a bonus. I am not concerned with the small movements up or down. If you are contra or short term trader, then don't bother with this stock. Just move on to other counters.

CNBG has vaccine supply agreements with several developing countries including Malaysia, Brazil, Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates, according to public reports compiled by Bloomberg. Leading Western developers like AstraZeneca and Pfizer have inked agreements with far more countries.

CNBG has said that its phase III trials — involving more than 50,000 people in countries from Argentina to Egypt — have been progressing smoothly, and it has not received any reports of serious adverse events.
