KUALA LUMPUR: Shares of low-cost carrier AirAsia Bhd slumped to an intra-morning low of RM1.43 – the lowest since July 2010.
At 11am, AirAsia was down 15 sen to RM1.49. Turnover was 72.86 million shares done at prices ranging from RM1.43 to RM1.68.
Its affiliate AirAsia X lost 0.5 sen to 20 sen in active trade.
The FBM KLCI fell 0.11 point or 0.01% to 1,722.13. Turnover was 529.05 million shares valued at RM406.62mil. There were 241 gainers, 252 losers and 274 counters unchanged.
AirAsia has come under heavy selling pressure over the past week.
CIMB Equities Research said AirAsia’s share price has reacted strongly to GMT Research’s report, which set a target price of RM1.23 as it believes a large dilutive rights issue is in store.
The research house said on Tuesday if AirAsia successfully secures new investors in Indonesia and the Philippines, the stock could stage a relief rally.
“This remains our base case, which is why we keep our Add call,” it said.
However, it lowered its target price, still pegged to sector average CY16 P/E of 11 times, as it cut its FY16-17 core group EPS by 7%-10% on larger losses for IAA and weaker ringgit forecasts.
“Re-rating catalysts include AirAsia securing RM1bil in repayment from associates,” it said.
AirAsia Bhd group chief executive Tan Sri Tony Fernandes said on Tuesday the US$300mil (RM1.12bil) bond issuance for AirAsia Bhd affiliates AirAsia Philippines and AirAsia Indonesia was set to be a success.
Fernandes said while Malaysia and Thailand were doing okay, the airline had been looking at how to turn around Indonesia and the Philippines.
“In Indonesia last time, the rupiah depreciated and then we fixed it and then the QZ8501 plane crash occurred. The crash didn’t affect demand except that we had to cut advertising,” he had stated.

Genting group's planned US$1.1bn (RM3.54bn) Resorts World Bayshore City (RWBC) in the Philippines is set to take off under a collaboration with Alliance Global Group Inc (AGI), according to a report by the Philippine Daily Inquirer. The RWBC, which will be a new gaming hub in Pagcor City, is a joint project between Genting Hong Kong Ltd and Its Philippine-based partner AGI. The Philippine Daily Inquirer, quoting AGI president Kingson Sian, reported that the groundbreaking ceremony for RWBC, which will be Genting group's second integrated gaming hub in the Philippines, will break ground within the next 90 days.
The first phase of RWBC is expected to be completed by 2018, San was quoted as saying. Separately, Genting Malaysia's first tranche of bond sales is expected to raise RM1.5bn, out of a total of RM5bn approved last week. It will be offered in the week beginning Sep 29, according to sources. (Financial Daily)
