Automotive the next big thing
At a time when personal computers are showing lower contribution and the smartphone market is saturated, most tech companies are banking on the automotive segment to drive future growth.

ViTrox’s Chu says growth from the automotive segment has just started, considering the car will become “the world’s biggest mobile device” in the future.

“We are seeing more and more electronic devices going into cars. In the near future, cars will be connected to other cars — they will be able to “talk” to each other.”

At present, says Chu, less than 1% of the cars are connected and these are mostly high-end models such as BMWs and Mercedes Benzes.

“Eventually, even Proton cars will be connected. The automotive segment will drive the electronic devices needed in the world,” he says.
“The automotive segment will be the next big wave after smartphones, and we see tremendous growth there. Previously, cars were all mechanical. Today, they are ‘smarter’. Therefore, a lot of electronic products are being made, even for basic-entry-level cars,” he says.

JOINING the US tech stock rally, Bursa Malaysia-listed semiconductor and semiconductor-related companies have risen between 22% and 250% this year. Year to date, the Bursa Malaysia Technology Index has soared 70% to 37.59 points, its highest level since 2005.

Local technology companies and investors are bullish about the sector’s prospects, mainly due to its long-term earnings sustainability, underpinned by the diversification of products and customer base.

Indeed, 2017 is promising to be another good year for the semiconductor supply chain with device, material and equipment suppliers expecting revenue and earnings growth for the year. According to information technology research and advisory firm Gartner Inc, worldwide semiconductor revenue is forecast to total US$386 billion this year, an increase of 12.3% from last year.

Favourable market conditions that gained momentum in the second half of 2016, particularly for commodity memory, have accelerated and raised the outlook for the market in 2017 and 2018.

Unit production estimates for premium smartphones, graphic cards, video game consoles and automotive applications have improved and contributed to the stronger outlook this year.
Gartner also projected global semiconductor capital spending to increase 10.2% to US$77.7 billion this year.

“This growth rate is up from the previous quarter’s forecast of 1.4% due to continued aggressive investment in memory and leading-edge logic, which is driving spending in wafer-level equipment,” it said in an Aug 2 press release on its 2Q2017 update.

It added that the concentration this year is due to strong manufacturing demand in memory and leading-edge logic.

On a separate note, global microelectronics industry association SEMI projects that the semiconductor material market will expand 2% this year in light of growth expectations for the device market.

Market forecasts for the semiconductor market this year are also optimistic, with growth projections ranging from 3% to 11%. Given current capital expenditure announcements and the strong equipment order activity throughout 2H2016, prospects for the semiconductor equipment subsector look bright as well.

Where are Malaysian players on the value chain?

Basically, local semiconductor firms are involved in the mid-to-lower end of the value chain, serving foreign semiconductor manufacturers, brand owners, integrated circuit (IC) developers and fabricators. They can be divided into three groups (see Table 1).
The first group comprises outsourced semiconductor assembly and test (OSAT) companies such as Unisem (M) Bhd, Globetronics Technology Bhd, Inari Amertron Bhd and Malaysian Pacific Industries Bhd (MPI), which provide outsourced services, including assembly, packaging, fabrication and testing.

The second group consists of automated test equipment (ATE) manufacturers like ViTrox Corp Bhd, Elsoft Research Bhd, Aemulus Holdings Bhd, MMS Ventures Bhd (MMSV), VisDynamics Holdings Bhd and Pentamaster Corp Bhd, which serve the OSAT companies and other multinational semiconductor manufacturers.

The third group comprises the likes of JF Technology Bhd and FoundPac Group Bhd, which design and manufacture high-performance test sockets and other materials for OSAT companies and semiconductor firms.

And then, there are the likes of V.S. Industry Bhd and SKP Resources Bhd, whose businesses are similar to that of Taiwanese contract manufacturing giant Hon Hai Precision Industry Co Ltd, better known as Foxconn Technology Group.

V.S. Industry and SKP Resources are generally categorised as electronic manufacturing service providers and are located lower in the value chain and, hence, are not considered semiconductor companies.

It is worth noting that most of the local semiconductor-related companies, including Globetronics, Inari Amertron, ViTrox, Elsoft, MMSV, Aemulus, Pentamaster and FoundPac, are headquartered in Penang — the Silicon Valley of Malaysia.

Some Important Notes :
Excluding the finance costs, which are notional in nature, as no cash payment is required, the firm said it would have registered an adjusted RM500,000 net profits in the current quarter

He said excluding the exchangeable medium-term notes, which were notional in nature, and may be exchanged for Green Packet’s ownership of Webe shares in 2022, the total debt was only RM900,000.

This translates to a net cash of RM82.2 million, or 11.4 sen per share as in the second quarter of FY 2017, which is a very high cash balance for the group.

Green Packet Q2 revenue up 7pc to RM82.7 million

KUALA LUMPUR: Information and communications technology player Green Packet Bhd second quarter revenue ended June 2017 of RM82.7 million was seven per cent higher than RM77.5 million, posted a year ago.

The company also narrowed its losses 89 per cent to RM3.6 million from a bigger loss of RM32.7 million, a year ago.

Excluding the finance costs, which are notional in nature, as no cash payment is required, the firm said it would have registered an adjusted RM500,000 net profits in the current quarter, compared with an adjusted net loss of RM28.7 million, in same period last year.

For the first six months ended June 2017, revenue and net loss were reported at RM162 million and RM9 million, respectively.

This shows improvement, when compared with revenue of RM165.1 million and net loss of RM13.4 million, registered previously.

”We’ve launched key initiatives this year to enable new revenue streams in E-Services, including the financial technology and Internet of Things (IOT) platform, which are complementary and synergistic to the existing core business pillars,” said Green Packet chief executive officer and executive director Tan Kay Yen.

Earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (Ebitda) for second quarter came in lower at RM1.8 million versus RM4.4 million in same period last year.

This is due to exceptional gains of RM2 million for the software and devices segment, due to write back of inventories and start-up cost of the E-Services segment, which was contained to about RM1 million to RM1.2 million.

“We are working hard to launch these new business segments, which will significantly strengthen Green Packet’s income stream in the future,” said Tan.

http://www.thestar.com.my/business/business-news/2017/08/30/gpacket-narrows-losses-to-rm5-53mil-in-2q/

KUALA LUMPUR: Green Packet Bhd has narrowed its second quarter net loss to RM5.53mil, compared with RM31.76mil a year ago.

The communication and technology services company, posted the second quarter revenue of RM82.69mil, up 7% from RM77.53mil in the corresponding quarter of 2016.

Its software and devices business posted a 44% increase in revenue to RM27.38mil against RM19.03mil in the same period last year. The group said its Ebitda for the quarter stood at RM1.77mil, down 59% from RM4.36 a year ago.

Green Packet said its software and devices business registered higher sales in the current quarter compared to year on year basis mainly due to higher devices shipment to major customers in Middle East, which offset the drop in shipment to Malaysia’s customers in the current quarter.

However, Green Packet said its communication services business recorded a slightly lower revenue of 6% to RM55.04mil in the second quarter as compared to the previous year-on-year mainly due to slightly lower international voice traffic to Indonesia and Myanmar.

In the first six months, Green Packet’s net loss stood at RM10.9mil on revenue of RM162mil.

Green Packet said its board was mindful of the changing market and technology landscape affecting the group’s business in the years ahead and was therefore continuously instituting efforts to improve the performance of the group.

Its efforts included securing a greater geographical reach in markets for new LTE products, expending of wholesale voice traffic and grow the wholesale data services, investing in new growth areas such as Internet of Things and e-Services platform and upselling new media devices and platform developed by its associate company.

I copy this from Q2'17 report......I hope they are telling the truth.
Prospects
Sales growth in the Far East region has been encouraging. The double digit revenue
growth target set by the Group for this region remain unchanged.
Orders for products continue to stream in from our customers in the enterprise storage
segment. During this quarter, the revenue for this segment increased by approximately
89% as compare to the preceding quarter. We do not expect significant revenue growth
for this segment in the next quarter after three consecutive quarters of sales increment.
Nevertheless, barring any unforeseen circumstances, the fiscal year revenue for this
market segment relative to 2016 is expected to increase by threefold.
Similarly, demand for ATE from the smartphone and tablet segments has been strong
for the past three quarters. Barring any unforeseen circumstances, we expect the total
revenue for this market segment to beat the numbers achieved in fiscal year 2015 and
2016.
The combined revenue from the enterprise storage, smartphone and tablet segments
constitute close to 90% of the Group revenue.
The Group has taken steps to hedge against foreign exchange risk from this quarter
onward.
