Paramount expands footprint in e-commerce with Commerce.Asia buy
By NST Business - March 17, 2022 @ 12:54pm
KUALA LUMPUR: Paramount Corp Bhd has invested RM10 million in Commerce DotAsia Ventures Sdn Bhd (Commerce.Asia).

Commerce.Asia is an all-in-one e-commerce ecosystem that provides one stop, end-to-end e-commerce solutions for brands, businesses, and small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Southeast Asia.

Paramount said the investment was made through its wholly-owned investment vehicle Magna Intelligent Sdn Bhd (Magna) and Magna's 30 per cent-owned associated company, Omegaxis Sdn Bhd, which owns Fundaztic.
"This is in line with Paramount's five-year (2020-2024) strategic plan to identify new sources of earnings, particularly in the digital space. "Paramount is also the lead applicant of a consortium applying to Bank Negara for a digital banking licence," the company said in a statement today. It said the pandemic had shifted consumer behaviour and accelerated e-commerce adoption worldwide over the past two years.
As such, the company's investment in Commerce.Asia was timely given its end-to-end ecosystem, track record, and business model which has almost doubled in revenue since 2020 and turned profitable in 2021, said Paramount corporate strategy and investment head Tracy Gan.

Commerce.Asia manages all aspects of customers' online businesses, from developing their online stores to managing product sales across multiple e-marketplaces, including warehousing, payment, delivery, marketing, and order management.

The company currently has over 92,000 active sellers who use its various platforms, with a group gross merchandise volume (GMV) of RM6.7 billion last year.

"The convergence of two fast emerging trends – fintech and e-commerce – serves as the platform for Fundaztic to provide financing to Commerce.Asia's network of merchants utilising advanced data analytics and insights," said Gan, adding that it also deepens and broadens the merchant ecosystem available to the Paramount Group.

Fundaztic is one of the first peer-to-peer (P2P) financing platforms in Malaysia licenced by the Securities Commission. It has disbursed close to RM150 million, supporting more than 2,350 micro to small and medium enterprises since 2017.

Jetstar Group CEO Gareth Evans said Bali has always been the most popular international destination in Jetstar’s network, with millions of people flying to the Indonesian island every year before COVID hit.
“We are very excited to return to Bali today after two long years, and we are confident that Bali will quickly regain its position as our most popular international tourist destination now that borders are open.
“Our recent Bali sale saw the biggest surge in bookings we’ve seen since 2016, and our recent surveys have consistently shown that Bali is still the top international destination people want to travel to.
“Pre-COVID, Jetstar operated up to 85 return flights per week to Bali, carrying more than two million customers each year and contributing almost two billion Australian dollars annually to the local Balinese economy.

KUALA LUMPUR: Paramount Corp Bhd plans to launch RM1.3 billion worth of properties in the financial year ending Dec 31, 2022 (FY2022), a 48 per cent increase from last year?s allocation, banking on the economic recovery and as Malaysia enters the endemic stage.

Chew said Paramount?s unbilled sales stood at RM1.1 billion for FY2021 which is expected to help its cashflow moving forward.

All banks have risk score card which dictates how loans are granted. At its height of business success, Genting was considered a safe bet to lend money to even without collateral. In fact most banks are lining up to lend money to Genting. Nobody can predict that COVID-19 could bring down a business. Genting has been a good paymaster and it's image and reputation as a successful business was never in doubt. Malaysian banks have been profiting from loans to Genting when times were good. Nobody made any comments about it. Banks give loan is a calculated risk. You win some, you lose some. Loans to Genting is much safer than loans given to politicians and their companies. Don't hit a business like Genting when it's down.

COVID Australia: PM declares ‘days of lockdown are gone’. “It’s not about numbers,” Mr Morrison told Nine’s Today program on Monday.

“This is a different type of variant which requires an evolution of our response.
“The days of lockdown are gone. We’re going forward, we’re not going back – that’s not how we manage this virus.
“There will be high case numbers, but the severity is a lot less so you focus on your healthcare system.”

@YellowLion9117:

Apparently, no Omicron positive patient has so far ended up in the hospital, let alone died.

Anecdotal evidence from doctors treating it in Africa, Europe and Asia is that patients are either asymptomatic or the symptoms are much milder than the Delta variant.

If that is the case (a big IF), Omicron may paradoxically start the end of the pandemic by replacing Delta with a strain, yes, more contagious but way less lethal. In that, its alleged higher transmission rate would be an advantage.

Either way, the hysterical and panicked reactions that we see everywhere are completely misplaced and unwarranted. One has to be cautious while remaining rational.

Needless to say, the press coverage worldwide has been shameless. Don't let them take you for a ride - stay calm, get information from trusted sources and carry on with your life.

India’s health ministry says the severity of COVID-19 disease from the Omicron variant in the country could be low due to vaccination and widespread exposure to the Delta variant that infected nearly 70 percent of the population by July.

“Given the fast pace of vaccination in India and high exposure to Delta variant as evidenced by high seropositivity, the severity of the disease is anticipated to be low,” it said in a statement on Friday.
