Malaysian consumers already burdened with rising costs and reduced subsidies now have to brace for a chilly New Year as the prices of cold beverages and desserts are expected to spike because of an increase in the price of ice.

The Tube Ice Manufacturers of Kuala Lumpur, Selangor and Putrajaya will be raising the price of ice by 50 sen a bag, while a block ice will cost RM2.50 effective on January 1.

In an advertisement placed in English newspapers by 26 ice manufacturers in the Klang Valley, they said the increase was unavoidable because of a rise in production and distribution cost.

“The latest revision of electricity tariff (about 17%) with effect on 01.01 2014 and the increase of diesel price (increase 11.1%) since 02.09.2013 have aggravated matters,” it said.

The price hike of ice was also due to the implementation of the minimum wage ruling in January and increases in the price of plastic bags, tyres and spare parts.

The manufacturers also attributed the hike to regular enforcement by the Health Ministry whereby under the Food Act, all ice producers and handlers are required to improve food safety procedures.

“We, therefore, have no choice, but, to adjust our price in order that our services to provide hygienic ice are not affected,” it added.

The Government agreed to a slew of price hikes since September, with cuts to the fuel and sugar subsidies, the raising of the electricity tariff effective next month, and a possible toll rate and assessment rate hikes next year.

It has also rolled out the goods and services tax (GST) pegged at 6% to replace the sales and services tax, which comes into effect in April 2015.

A study by Universiti Malaya's Centre for Democracy and Elections (UMCEDEL) early this month found that support for the Barisan Nasional administration will drop further if it failed to deal with the rising cost of living experienced by Malaysians.

At the same time, 61% of respondents disagreed with the Government's plan to introduce the GST. UMCEDEL director Prof Datuk Dr Mohammad Redzuan Othman said the rise in electricity tariffs and petrol prices had had a severe impact on those polled and that 52% felt that the Government's BR1M (1Malaysia People's Aid) handouts were inadequate to deal with rising prices.

Of the 1,676 respondents in the peninsula, about 42% were concerned with the rise in petrol prices, while 34% said they felt the effect of the rise in the price of goods and 24% felt the hike in electricity tariffs would have an impact on them.

Last week, a Merdeka Center survey found that concerns about the economy, particularly rising costs and inflation, were at the highest level, up to 67% of all respondents.

The survey found that 55% of voters in the peninsula said that they also did not understand the impact of the GST on their lives. – December 29, 2013.
