Okay, enough of the base-economic and “Vladimir Lenin’s Commanding Heights” stuff I just threw into the mix of our discussion on the global-economic-matrix of the impact of Covid-19. We were supposed to talk about this “human sacrifice” the current government is engaging in. By opening up too soon, so that money can be made. So that the workers, legal and illegal, can be called back to work. There are more than two million of them, whose fate we can no longer ascertain. The recent raid on undocumented migrants is bringing us into the idea of what we wish to salvage as a nation. As a country still struggling to forge a better understanding amongst the Malays, Chinese, Indians, Orang Asli, Iban, Kadasan-Dusun, and others that have been here since before and after independence, as legal Malaysians. Then the undocumented migrants arrived. By the hundreds of thousands. The addiction of the owners of the means of production to profit immensely through the system of modern-day slavery. Now we have got a major problem of what to do with them, when our economy had just nose-dived, tanked! Millions of undocumented migrants hoping for jobs. Some 200,000 Rohingya refugees hoping for citizenship. Legal citizens hoping they will still have jobs. Graduates don't have a clue what awaits them. Government still thinking in the pre-Industry 4.0 paradigm. Chaotic thinking must be fixed. Now. Post-Covid-19, each country must take care of her own citizens. The world has changed. Nationalism is back in popular demand. We are all economic beings, tied to the dictates of citizenship. No jobs anymore for undocumented migrants and hopeful refugees. New reality. For Malaysia, having millions of undocumented migrants is not a good policy to develop her economy. Train the locals first. Fix our labour laws to meet the need of social regeneration and the goals of sustainability rather than think of making immense profits entirely. Herein lie the miseducation of the human rights activists, I sense. In conclusion, I am writing this article on the “human sacrifice” on a national scale, poorly planned by the current government. A rush job inviting fatalities. It is May 6. We will know of the casualties of this war by June 6. Perhaps. I hope we will not be another Italy. Or the US. In our haste to make money.

Yes guyz...I suppose there are reasons for this. If is the intention that wearing the mask is mandatory then it must be the law. In which case we must state exactly what kind of mask is required ? If we do that then there arises the question of availability and affordability. Government should make sure that masks are available and provide them free of charge as many governments are doing. Otherwise poor people will always be in breach of the law.

Public encouraged to wear face mask especially in crowded areas

PUTRAJAYA (Bernama): Wearing a face mask is strongly encouraged, especially in public and crowded areas, to reduce the risk of infection from Covid-19, says Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

"The Ministry of Health (MOH) encourages people to wear masks but at the moment, it is not compulsory," he told a daily press conference on Covid-19 here Monday (May 4).

In addition, Dr Noor Hisham reminded that other conditions must also be followed namely maintaining social distancing of at least one metre and observing good personal hygiene including frequent hand-washing.

"The MOH hopes that all Malaysians will adhere to the SOP (standard operating procedure)," he said.

Asked on compliance by the public on the first day of the conditional movement control order (MCO), Dr Noor Hisham said it was too early to judge.

"But looking into the practice of other countries like in Taiwan or South Korea, they do not have MCO in place but they have social discipline and comply with the SOP.

"Now the SOP is clear and the MOH would like to urge all Malaysians to practise social distancing, put on a mask when in public and continue to wash hands from time to time," he said.

Dr Noor Hisham said the SOPs for the industries and restaurants were also clear and that compliance was very important to break the Covid-19 infection chain.

"If they can comply, we can break the infection chain, if not, there is a risk for our infectivity rate to increase from the current rate of 0.7 and this will be closely monitored," he said.

Asked on the ministry’s justification on the conditional MCO, which has been gazetted, Dr Noor Hisham said the strategy for MCO phase one, two and three was to flatten the curve by encouraging everyone to stay at home.

"MCO phase one, two and three and early part of four is to make sure the public stays at home, that is the message. Now the message to the public on conditional MCO is to follow the SOP,"

For dividends stocks, once it go ex, the prices will drop. So in effect you are also selling out/take profit. Only in this case, you are forced to, not by choice. U can then use the dividends to spend, or invest in another stock with better risk/reward or reinvest in that stock again.

For pure capital gains, now you have a choice. Here, you are not forced to take profit. You sell it because you need the money or you see other better opportunities in terms of risk/reward.

For etf, say it has performed well but you are starting to get a bit nervous but at same time you are FOMO. You can first stop adding more money into it, and leave it be n monitor. If you are DCA type, then that already reduce ur risks.

If you get more nervous, then you can take some money off the table. You don't have to sell it all or even most.just a small %, as long as the transaction cost makes sense. Fund investors call this"rebalancing". You can put the proceeds into another stock or etf.

In my case, I have price target. Hit target then it will be on watch list to sell, but I wont sell yet until it reach some sort of resistance. I will then sell some, most or all depending on the outlook as I see it.

My personal view,

PB figure is one of "weakest" indicator, and nowadays market doesn't emphasis too much on book value issue.

Market cares more about company on going forwards profitability and dividend yield.
Book value is something only good of viewing only.

Also, book value can be wiped off instantly, if a particular company business is out of favour or drastic changing business environment/industry.

Nowadays, we needs to look at specific company with specific purpose, generating a list of low PB, PE and think those at top list one good for investing, is a dangerous method and can easily fall into so called PE and PB trap.

Azmin Ali’s leadership failure as the responsible minister in this important matter seems exposed if not obvious. The dissenting outcomes which could be viewed as unparalleled in the history of our federal structure does point towards an inability if not incompetence to persuade common consensus. The fragile PN government is obviously fraught with leadership ineffectiveness under the present crisis . It’s normal for a national crisis to bring out the good caliber or otherwise expose the incompetences of individuals in positions of responsibility. Malaysians seem to generally agree that the DG for medical services has come on top on leadership effectiveness .

Kit Siang claims no MCO consensus during meeting with state leaders

Veteran opposition MP Lim Kit Siang claimed that there was no consensus reached during a National Security Council meeting on April 28 with the chief executives of 13 states regarding the resumption of business.
In a statement today, the Iskandar Puteri MP claimed that Putrajaya should have called for a second meeting with the chief ministers and menteri besar of these states before imposing the conditional movement control order (MCO), which allowed most businesses to resume, on May 4.
"This is what (International Trade and Industry Minister) Azmin (Ali) should do now instead of issuing a dubious legal threat last night," said Lim, who is a DAP veteran leader.
At the time of writing, Malaysiakini is unable to independently verify Lim's stunning claims. Efforts to confirm this with state governments are currently underway.
It should also be noted that Chow Kon Yeow, the chief minister of Penang, is a senior member of DAP.
Lim was referring to Azmin's claim last night that the states which did not allow businesses to resume operations, in line with the federal government gazette issued by Health Ministry Dr Adham Baba on May 3, would risk being sued by business owners.
As of yesterday, six states - Sarawak, Sabah, Kelantan, Penang, Kedah and Pahang - have yet to reopen their economies.
Azmin also claimed that a consensus had arrived during the April 28 meeting after the chief executive of states were briefed that should the MCO be extended until June, the cumulative loss of national income would wipe out all the growth achieved over the past four years.
Lim said that the refusal to comply by some states was proof that there was no "whole-of-government" approach and an example of a "shambolic" exit plan with poor coordination.
He said Azmin should take pay heed to the chairperson of the Parliamentary select committee on federal/state Relations, Hassan Abdul Karim, who pointed out that federal and state governments are jointly given power on health matters under the ninth schedule of the Federal Constitution.
"It is urgent and imperative that the government adopt an 'all-of-government' and 'whole-of-society' approach with Parliament playing its oversight and scrutiny role to ensure the nation's success in the invisible war against Covid-19 pandemic.
"So far the government has acted as if it knows best when clearly it does not,"

Easing of MCO 'too fast, too soon', says MTUC

KUALA LUMPUR: The government's move to relax restrictions under the Movement Control Order (MCO) can cause the Covid-19 pandemic to worsen and put workers lives at risk.

The Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) said Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin's announcement of the Conditional MCO (CMCO), which would see most businesses reopening from Monday onwards, came "too fast, too soon."

Its secretary-general J. Solomon in a statement today urged the premier to delay the implementation of the CMCO to allow more time for employers, workers, consumers to adjust and live under the "new normal".

"This will not take forever, but it will certainly take more than three days.

"And to make it work, the government machinery must be visible on the ground to help everyone make smooth transition to the new normal so that the economic recovery can be sustained and shielded from a fresh wave of Covid-19 attacks.

"It (the announcement) came as a shock. The government is doing too much to kick start the economy, given that the Covid-19 pandemic threat remains real in Malaysia."

Solomon said the announcement was made despite figures showing that since April 25, more than half of the 380 new Covid-19 cases were local or community transmissions.

A total of 248 or 65.3 per cent of cases were community transmissions, compared to 132 imported cases (34.7 per cent).

The statistics clearly showed that a new wave of Covid-19 outbreak remained to be a possibility in the country and the number of hot spots across Malaysia was still high, he said.

These figures, he said, should have been sufficient for the government to see through the completion of the 4th phase of the MCO, scheduled to end on May 12, before considering the possibility of easing the restrictions.

Solomon cited developments in Japan, Singapore, Germany and Canada as examples to show how the situation could change dramatically if restrictions were lifted too soon.

"MTUC is worried that the government is acting hastily in doing away with many of the MCO curbs in the name of saving the country from further economic damage.

"No one wants to return to work more than the 15 million workers in the country. But has the government ensured that employers will put the safeguards in place for the safety of workers?

"Is there enough enforcement on the ground to ensure employers comply with the SOP drawn up by the Health Ministry? Are these health screenings actually taking place?"

All these, Solomon said, were important issues that needed to be addressed before companies be given the green light to resume operations.

He said the public and businesses should first be provided with all the relevant information as well as clarification on SOPs.

Local authorities, health officers, and those from the relevant ministries, he said, should ensure the SOPs complied with, before giving approval for these entities to operate.

This, he said, would instill public confidence and ensure the business community sustain their operations by maintaining the highest health care standards.

"MTUC cannot fathom the need for the government to lift major MCO restrictions with just a three-day notice to the rakyat, companies, restaurants, shopping malls, coffee shops which clearly need much more time in order to make the necessary adjustments.

"Another point to consider is the possibility of enforcement teams indulging in corruption, something which is not impossible based on past experiences in our enforcement teams. These, if allowed to happen, may be the cause of a second or third wave."

MTUC also urged the government not to risk the health and safety of workers, both local and foreign as feedback gained showed that many employers who were earlier been allowed to operate ignored basic safety measures, such as the wearing of masks, use of sanitisers and social distancing.

"The poor, squalid, and cramped living conditions of many of the workers are a major cause of concern."

Businesses, he said, need not worry about losing their in

come as once the MCO is totally lifted, people would rush to buy all the items that they lacked in huge quantities, hence they would regain their lost profits in no time.

If waiting for court conviction is too much of leaving to chance, could Muhyiddin resort to breaking up both UMNO and Bersatu at the same time before the UMNO big wigs strike back?

New party?

There is a rumour in the city that Muhyiddin, Azmin and Hishammuddin are trying to form a new party. For them, this could be a brilliant solution to solve all the problems. There’s no need to worry about Bersatu election, Azmin’s supporters could find a political home, and Hishammudin’s faction could bring the real support that Muhyiddin needed.

However, there are two challenges for this plan.

First, Muhyiddin has only a maximum of 113 or 114 seats. If Pakatan Harapan parties (PKR, DAP, Amanah) and Warisan, as well as Mahathir faction of Bersatu MPs stick together, Muhyiddin has no room to maneuver.

If Muhyiddin, Azmin and Hishammuddin manage to break up this “Pakatan plus” coalition, they would be able to form their new party without the need to have both Najib and Zahid’s groups. In their calculations, they probably would attempt to lure the support of a few Pakatan MPs.

Second, Muhyiddin must be very careful with Johor UMNO. Its leaders are so eager to wrest power they lost in the last GE.

My friendly advice to the Prime Minister whom I used to work very closely with and had many candid conversations during our time as PH partners is this: UMNO could pull a fast one on him in his own backyard in Johor.

A snap election in Johor may mean the end of Bersatu in the state, as well as Muhyiddin could even lose his Bukit Gambir state seat.

In these tense political undercurrents, it could be Muhyiddin that would trigger something to tear down and tame his UMNO challengers. Or it could be Johor UMNO that would trigger the beginning of the onslaught against the Prime Minister.

For Pakatan Harapan and the allies who choose to side with us, such as Warisan and the Mahathir faction of Bersatu, we must stick together. Malaysians who voted for Pakatan Harapan expecting a clean government and better economic opportunities will still support us.

Stock

2020-04-28 14:10 | Report Abuse

Muhyiddin’s options

Ideally, Muhyiddin would want to get rid of the Mahathir supporters, and to find a way not to have Bersatu party elections. He wants to avoid Mukhriz Mahathir’s challenge for Bersatu presidency, although it’s difficult for the Kedah Mentri Besar to win but it’s not an impossible task.

Muhyiddin also knows that among the four UMNO factions, he could only trust Hishammuddin Hussein’s group.

PKR renegade Azmin Ali is hoping to have a party structure that he could play a significant role and could bring in his grassroots supporters who currently has no political home due to the limbo in Bersatu. He also needs to create a political space for his non-Malay supporters who are no longer welcome in PKR yet has nowhere to go.

For Muhyiddin’s government to gain legitimacy, he needs to show that he runs a clean government. The voters, particularly the deciding swing voters among the Malays, value integrity highly, apart from economic wellbeing.

Apart from ensuring jobs and economic wellbeing for ordinary Malaysians, the Prime Minister must show voters that he is committed to fighting corruption, oherwise he would never gain moral legitimacy for launching the political coup against the democratically elected government of Pakatan Harapan.

To convince the people, he needs to demonstrate his commitment to fighting corruption by allowing justice to take its course – for Najib and Rosmah Mansor, Tengku Adnan Mansor and Zahid to go to jail when they are convicted by courts for corruption.

The only problem is, can he do so without UMNO revolting?

Stock

Now back to today. Muhyiddin is governing his shaky coalition with 10 groups within PN.

There are four factions in Bersatu – those who joined in 2016, those who joined Bersatu from UMNO after Pakatan Harapan won the general election in 2018; Azmin Ali’s group; and Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s supporters who could create an upset in the Bersatu party election which has been delayed ostensibly due to Covid-19 situation.

Another four are competing factions in UMNO; each led by Najib, Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Hishammuddin Hussein, and a non-aligned group which include Mohammad Hassan and Khairy Jamaluddin.

The other two consist of PAS and Gabungan Parti Sarawak.

Most people can see that it is actually the main players in his fledgling Perikatan Nasional government that are jostling for positions and power during this current crisis of Covid-19 outbreak in Malaysia.

Perhaps the Prime Minister made the remarks in his attempt to hide the fact that, at this moment, he is merely a sitting duck despite his immense powers as the head of the government.

Why do I say this? Let me begin with a true story. Lim Kit Siang and I rushed back from our events in Johor on 25 July 2015 at the request of Parti Keadilan Rakyat’s Secretary-General Saifuddin Nasution Ismail for an emergency discussion. As close allies, we consult each other regularly, especially on major developments in politics.
