Todays Business Times :SUMATEC
ASSET INJECTION: Firm targeting more than RM1b profit by 2018, say sources
FORMER Renong Bhd executive chairman Tan Sri Halim Saad is scaling up Sumatec Resources Bhd, which is set to make more than RM1 billion in net profit by 2018.
Halim controls 24.9 per cent of Sumatec and has been maintaining his shares since last November as he believes that the company can grow fast.
“He is not selling his shares anytime soon. He plans to build up the company by injecting more assets into it. He is eyeing some oil and gas (O&G) assets in Central Asia,” said a source.
Sumatec expects to produce 30,000 barrels of oil a day in Kazakhstan by 2018. Sources say the company is targeting an average net profit of US$30 (RM95.30) per barrel.
“This means it will make around US$900,000 a day from 30,000 barrels, or more than US$328.5 million a year, compared with less than US$20 million currently from existing operations,” said the source.
For the financial year ending December 31 2014, Sumatec is projecting RM69 million in profits.
The firm is producing oil at the Rakuschechnoye field with Markmore Energy (Labuan) Ltd, which is 99 per cent-owned by Halim.
Sumatec expects to produce 5,000 barrels of oil and gas a day from this field in the next three years.
It is also acquiring Borneo Energy Oil and Gas Ltd, which owns 100 per cent of Buzachi Neft LLP, for US$250 million in cash and shares.
Buzachi has two 25-year contracts to explore and produce oil and gas in the Karaturun Vostochnyi and Karaturun Morskoi fields, also known as Buzachi Fields.
At a recent media briefing, Sumatec chief executive officer Chris Dalton said he expects the acquisition to be completed by October.
He said the two assets will contribute US$1.62 million to Sumatec’s profits in the fourth quarter.
Sumatec is targeting to produce 25,000 barrels of oil and gas a day from the Buzachi Fields.
Meanwhile, Sumatec is expected to move out of its PN17 status by next month and will submit its application to the Securities Commission soon.

I guess not many are in tune to Pharma business in this forum. As I understand, this technology can be set up pretty fast unlike the requirements for injections, tablets or capsules. Can you imagine - the technology is housed in a space of just a 40 footer container ! If demand grows they only need to expand in the same manner. This will be good business not only for Malaysia, but also for the region's 500 million people. So you can imagine the potential growth for CCM group.

In Malaysian Reserve today :
Chemical Co of Malaysia Bhd’s wholly owned subsidiary, CCM Pharmaceuticals Sdn Bhd (CCMP), signed a memorandum of understanding with India-based Cipla Ltd to evaluate the setting up of a metereddose inhaler (MDI) facility in Bangi, Selangor.
The partners aim to set up a RM60 million facility to manufacture, market, sell and distribute MDIs in Malaysia and Asean as most MDI products are imported.
“This partnership will enable both CCMP and Cipla to leverage our respective strengths and capabilities to manufacture products that meet the needs of healthcare professionals and patients.
“Cipla’s commitment in respiratory care and research and development expertise, coupled with CCMP’s manufacturing facility, marketing and distribution network, will place Malaysia as an export hub for the region providing quality respiratory products,” CCMP division director Leonard Ariff Abdul Shatar (picture) said in a statement last Friday.
This MDI facility, which will be the first in Asean, is expected to be commissioned by the second-quarter of 2015. The strategic alliance will help both parties tap into the MDI market in Malaysia, valued at RM95 million per annum.
Cipla is a generic pharmaceutical manufacturer that specialises in respiratory, cardiac, cancer, anti-retro virals and anti-infective medication, and has over 40 manufacturing units, 11 of which have international regulatory approvals.
CCMP produces nearly 300 generic products which include analgesics, antibacterial, antihistamines and many others, and also manufactures over-the-counter products with about 200 items under established brands.
MDI is a device that delivers a specific amount of medication to the lungs and is the most commonly used delivery system to treat asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases and other respiratory diseases.
“Although respiratory disease does not sound as serious as the likes of heart disease, cancer or stroke, it can greatly affect a person’s quality of life. “Proper medication methods are important as respiratory disease can be life-threatening if left untreated,” Leonard said.

PETALING JAYA (July 15, 2013): There is too much idle capacity at Biosis Group Bhd's pharmaceutical factory in Sungai Bakap, Penang that new managing director Shahfie Ahmad (pix) has made it his top priority to get the plant up to its full potential.
"We are potentially looking at (securing) contract manufacturing (agreements) with the likes of Pharmaniaga Bhd and Idaman Pharma Sdn Bhd to manufacture certain drugs. With Pharmaniaga expanding its overseas market, we see new opportunities in increasing our manufacturing capacity,'' he told SunBiz in an interview.
Shahfie said the company plans to invest RM5 million over the next one year to acquire new technology and expand its manufacturing capabilities.
The investment, he said, will add softgel capsule and bilayer tablet manufacturing capabilities to the plant.
He also plans introduce advanced process management system to boost efficiency and quality.
"Our strategy is to introduce high-quality generic pharmaceutical products as well as super generic products which are much sought in the European market. We are eyeing new off-patent products worth more than US$440 million,'' Shahfie said.
Currently, utilisation at Biosis' pharmaceutical plant stood at 25% of its full capacity. At that rate, most factories would be running at a loss.
Biosis has been in the red since 2008. The company made a net loss of RM15.4 million on revenue of RM13.76 million for the financial year ended March 31, 2013.
Shahfie, 44, was appointed to head Biosis on April 25, 2013, with the task of leading the company's reorganisation.
The company, which was designated as a Practice Note 17 (PN17) affected issuer on June 27, 2013 as its shareholders equity was less than 50% of the total paid-up capital, is in the midst of preparing its regularisation plan to address the issue.
Shahfie said Biosis has already taken the necessary steps to steady the company. At its AGM in May, it won shareholders' approval to proceed with plans to dispose of its Cosmoceutical plant and business.
"There is still a lot of potential in the personal care business, but we will need to look on restrategising our move in that segment.
"Our focus is now on growing the healthcare business, especially in pharmaceutical and biomedical segments." he said.
The vice-president of the Malaysian Professional Medical Device Association brings 20 years of business experience to Biosis in a career that spans the telecommunication industry. His private companies are involved in facilities management and healthcare services.
One is Chulia Facilities Management Sdn Bhd, which provides mechanical and engineering services, including heat ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) contracting services at 18 government hospitals and medical institutions in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor.
Another joint venture with Dutch-based IDS International – Information Display Services Asia Sdn Bhd – is a provider of healthcare intelligence services. It offers market access to approximately over 100,500 doctor's network and 880 million patient contacts globally on an annual basis.
Shahfie's other company Chulia Biomedical Engineering Sdn Bhd provides consultancy and maintenance of medical equipment and product supply and equipment planning for several government and private hospitals.
Shahfie did not discount the possibility of injecting his own companies into Biosis, but declined to be drawn into a discussion pending a submission to Bursa Malaysia.

Amigos - this PN17 is just temporary, be cool. The new Chairman was ex Deputy Minister of Health ( Hj Datuk Dr Abdul Latiff )- just think, would he have joined blindly to spoil his name & reputation knowing the state of affairs in Biosis ? Certainly there is a plan for a turn-around. Have a good dose of patience for now !Theirs is a drug manufacturing business - worse case scenario, with their GMP status manufacturing outfit in Sg Bakap - it can be easily snapped up by local or foreign companies.
However, everyones comments and criticism of the goings-on is respected ! Cheerios Amigos

Thanks azta12 - have been accumulating and averaging my Biosis shares. Just have to have patience now. At least with the loss making cosmetic business taken out of its books soon, it should allow the new management better focus in their more profitable prescription product business. Lets hope Azta12 that the new chairman can use his experience and influence since he has sound knowledge of the industry. he is quite a charismatic and approachable chap as I have met him before.
