SHAH ALAM: Selangor Menteri Besar Mohamed Azmin Ali has written a letter to Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin saying that issues concerning the restructuring of the state’s water industry can be resolved immediately.
Azmin said the restructuring process was now in the final stage and that he hoped that it could be finalised before Aidilfitri.
“Yesterday, I managed to meet the DPM, who is also the chairman of the special cabinet committee on Selangor Water Issues, and discussed several issues concerning the restructuring of the water industry and I’m happy that the issues were resolved.
“Today, I have written a letter to the DPM as a follow up to ensure one or two other issues can also be resolved immediately because I really hope that the restructuring process can be finalised before Hari Raya,” he told reporters here today.
The menteri besar, however, refused to comment further.
Azmin also expressed thanks to Prime Minister Najib Razak for the determination and commitment shown by the Federal Government in ensuring success of the master agreement on the restructuring of the state’s water industry.
“The state government will also give its approval and expedite the Langat 2 project if it receives the application from the relevant quarters to solve the water supply woes in Selangor and the Klang Valley,” he said.
On water disruption occurring in Hulu Langat and Kuala Langat, Azmin gave an assurance that the state government would not implement water rationing anytime soon.
“The water disruption in the two areas occurred because of the shortage of treated water supply … but there is no water rationing implemented so far,” he added.

SHAH ALAM: There will not be any water rationing in Selangor, says Azmin Ali (pic).

In assuring this, the Mentri Besar said various measures were being taken to ensure consumers had sufficient supply.

Among the measures taken was building water tanks in high-risk areas, he said.

"Syabas (Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor) has been instructed to build water tanks in areas prone to water disruption," Azmin told reporters when met at the state secretariat Tuesday.

He said other measures included the Water Mitigation Project 2, where treated water from northern areas of Selangor would be channelled to the south.

"Treated water in the north of Selangor exceeds demand," he said, adding the situation was reversed in the south.

He said the project, a Federal Government initiative, was expected to be ready by September.

Azmin explained that Selangor had an ample supply of raw water in its dams, but faced a shortage of treated water as all water treatment plants were already working at maximum capacity.

On the state's water restructuring deal with the Government, Azmin said he had met Energy, Green Technology and Water Minister Dr Maximus Ongkili last week to iron out three issues both parties could not agree on.

"The matter has been resolved but there is still one issue that needs to be agreed to by both parties," said Azmin.

He said the deal would be sealed between both parties within the month.

Azmin also added he met Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak after the National Finance Council meeting recently to get his and the Government's opinion on measures taken to settle the water restructuring deal.

Setiausaha Badan Perhubungan Umno Selangor, Datuk Johan Abdul Aziz berkata, jika sebelum ini penduduk Bandar Tasik Kesuma terputus bekalan air selama sembilan hari, kini masalah sama melanda Bandar Rinching.

SHAH ALAM: Menteri Besar Mohamed Azmin Ali must stop dragging his feat in resolving Selangor's water problems or step down before it is too late. Former Menteri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim said Azmin lacked credibility and commitment in finalising the restructuring of the state's water industry and has jeopardised the water deal. "I believe that many people in the Klang Valley and Selangor, especially, felt disappointed with the attitude if the state government and the Menteri Besar who clearly do not have the credibility nor commitment to immediately restructure the state's water services industry. "Recently, we were surprised by the 'threat' by Puncak Niaga Holdings Berhad (PNHB), the largest shareholder in two of the state's water concessionaire, Puncak Niaga Sdn Bhd and Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor (Syabas) to rescind the sales and purchase agreement with Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Air Selangor) after five applications by Air Selangor to extend the period of fulfilling the conditions in the agreement. "PNHB has also threatened to take legal action to recover its outstanding debt which has reached RM4.97 billion as at March 31 this year. "It is not impossible that PNHB's threat become a reality considering the immunity enjoyed by another water concessionaire, Syarikat Pengeluar Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (SPLASH) which had stubbornly refused the offer from Kumpulan Darul Ehsan Berhad (KDEB) and the protacted failure of the state government to finalise the master agreement signed on Sept 12, 2014 with the Federal government, Pengurusan Aset Air Berhad (PAAB) and Air Selangor," he said in a statement, here, today. Abdul Khalid, who is also Port Klang assemblyman said he believed that the Fderal government would not hesitate to enforce the Water Services Industry Act 2006, especially Section 114 if this effort is deadlocked as water consumers in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya would be facing critical water shortage if the Langat 2 water treatment plant and its distribution system (LRAL2) failed to be completed by 2017.

SHAH ALAM: Selangor Menteri Besar Mohamed Azmin Ali today criticised his predecessor for not being able to settle the water industry restructuring during his six years long tenure but was hurling insults at him now. He slammed his predecessor Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim for urging him to solve the water issue immediately or step down. "It is never ending with this Khalid Ibrahim (tak habis-habis lah Khalid Ibrahim ini). "He (Khalid) failed to solve (the water issue) for six years, I am just (Menteri Besar) for nine months," he told reporters after a Selangor PKR meeting at the Menteri Besar's official residence at Section 7, here, today. Earlier today, Khalid issued a statement urging Azmin to stop dragging his feet in resolving Selangor's water problems or step down before it is too late.

KUALA LUMPUR: Some 244 areas involving 402,333 homes in Kuala Lumpur and Hulu Langat experienced unscheduled disruption of water supply and low water pressure when the raw water pump at the Sungai Langat Water Treatment Plant (WTP) broke down at 10am today. Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Syabas) Corporate Affairs executive director Priscilla Alfred said this forced them to reduce production of treated water to 432 million litres daily (MLD) compared to 460 MLD. “Sungai Langat WTP operator Puncak Niaga (M) Sdn Bhd expects repair of the pump to start on Monday and will be fully completed on Tuesday (June 30),” she said in a statement tonight. Among the affected areas are Taman Connaught; Desa Tun Razak; Jalan Syed Putra; Jalan Chan Sow Lin; Wisma Putra; Balakong industrial area; Taman Sungai Besi Indah (1,2,3); Bandar Tun Hussein Onn; Jalan Langat Batu 14 to Batu 17 and Jalan Kuari Sungai Long. Alfred said to reduce the burden of users, Syabas will continue to provide emergency water supply via lorry tankers to the affected areas. Since the area involved is large, priority will be given for emergency purposes such as death and weddings other than hospitals, dialysis centres and charity homes, she said. “We (Syabas) will continue to inform users of the water supply status from time to time as required,” she added. – BERNAMA

KUALA LUMPUR: It seems that the Selangor water impasse, which was expected to be resolved yesterday with the signing of a new supple- mentary agreement, is now set to prolong further as The Edge Finan- cial Daily has learnt that both the federal and Selangor governments need more time to clarify the de- tails of the agreement before seal- ing the deal.
It is understood that the draft supplementary water agreement that would bring about Selangor’s water consolidation has gone back for further amendments.
“Apparently, Azmin (Selangor Menteri Besar Mohamed Azmin Ali) will ask for some further amend- ments after chairing the Selangor exco (executive council) meeting yesterday (Wednesday). Some terms needs to be renegotiated,” a source with knowledge of the matter told The Edge Financial Daily.
Perhaps the actual draft was not as what was promised or discussed by both parties, the source said. It is not certain at this point what are the issues forcing Selangor to re- assess the draft, the source added. Several Selangor exco members, when contacted, remained tight-
lipped on the details discussed during Wednesday’s state-exco meeting.
Yesterday, The Edge Financial Daily reported that the federal and Selangor governments were set to sign the supplementary agreement, which would see the state main- taining ownership of its water as- sets and Putrajaya proceeding with the long-delayed development of the Langat 2 water treatment plant project.
Quoting a source, the daily said that the federal government had conceded most of the points of contention in the master agreement that were raised by the Selangor government led by Mohamed Az- min, points that had stalled efforts to finalise the state’s water restruc- turing so far.
One key issue was that the own- ership of land that the water assets sit on remains with the state gov- ernment post-restructuring.
Meanwhile, shares in water pipe manufacturers such as Eng- tex Group Bhd, rose four sen or 3.67% to close at RM1.13 yester- day after heavy trading, boosted by news that the protracted water impasse in Selangor could be re- solved with the new supplemen- tary agreement.
