Datasonic’s puzzling contract ( TheStar )

AS if issues surrounding technical glitches with our passports weren’t already troubling. Datasonic Group Bhd, a company in the thick of things related to recent passport hiccups, has announced a contract that raises a few questions.

On Thursday, Datasonic said one of its units had inked a supply and purchase agreement with Percetakan Keselamatan Nasional Bhd (PKN) to supply the data pages for passports (Datasonic is in the process of taking over PKN’s role as the main contractor for printing and supplying Malaysian passports). What was odd about the contract was its effective period – it was for a seven-month period from April 2016 to Oct 31, 2016. There is no explanation as to why this contract is being signed only now or to whether it has already been executed. The statement goes on to say that the agreement is subject to the receipt of orders from the Immigration Department for e-passports, each to contain a data page with an embedded chip.
