Sir @nicholas99

I agree ..

DNeX is also an O&G company so cannot xref with Petronas as well

DNeX also does trade facilitation etc so cannot xref with e-commerce companies

That's why I throw away most of the FA tools such as P/E etc .. sheer waste of time and irrelevant.

I treat my investment as putting money into a slightly grown-up start-up

Sir @fengpinglangjin

i want to be provide a fair and neutral picture in this forum.

SilTerra is a pure play wafer fab. It "strays" a bit by creating its own libraries (like app or subroutine) for customers to design or compose their chips. This is an IP which may have yet to be valuated. Hint hint hint ..

With regards to the DNA sequencing chip I don't have the details but am quite sure that the ideas and design belongs to that Californian company else they cannot be sold for that price.

Hence the role of SilTerra as a pp (not private placement ;-)) is to provide services (maybe the odd library) to that company to design the chip as well as to fabricate the chips. Usually for samples before production run.

And as a reminder to readers here - this type of exercise will cut into the 46K wafer starts. So that reduces your 46K X USD 4500 projection as there is a high probability of defects amongst those runs. That's reality yah ..

Whether this Californian company or Son Hai / Foxconn or Chipmore opps Chipone raise orders, efforts are needed to do these engineering and test runs (and hence chew up the available capacity).

Just a simple explanations without going into too much details.

Not so straight forward as Siam Road char kway teow!

For your lunch time viewing ...

Especially for those who were saying DNeX has old outdated technology and cannot access to the newer ones that are embargoed by US ladidah ladidah ...

14nm and 28nm chips are still the most important for most industrial needs.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JkQhU9Pgb3M

All DNeX has to do is to ensure quality delivery based on their 46K wafer starts. Not a big ask especially with the recent MACC actions.

Not exactly slam dunk but highly doable.

For those who are screaming about QR or prices perhaps its good to revisit an old interview with Tan Sri to get an understanding of where DNeX is heading - not just with SilTerra but also with Ping including timelines.

Like I said there are some shrewd business minds behind that.

So perhaps we can cut down 2/3 of the posts and have more time to look at other counters.

Three Chinese chip distributors fined for abnormal price increases as prolonged chip shortage raises costs for carmakers

- China’s market regulator fined the chip distributors nearly US$390,000 for price increases above what it considers the normal 7 to 10 per cent

- The global chip shortage has hit China’s automotive industry especially hard, as the country relies on imports for 90 per cent of semiconductor products

@fenginglangjin sifu

Many thanks for your positive posts especially those numbers with a lot of zeroes in revenue.

I would love to believe in those but i urge caution as well len-jing

SilTerra may have a wafer start of 46K starts per month but their "back-end" fab capacity may not cater for that volume as they have a variety of equipment set for different products and technologies eg aluminum or copper etc ..

SilTerra would have to take orders from customers and schedule their production accordingly. That itself is a daunting challenge.

SilTerra would do best by optimising their earnings based on the equipment and capacity they have.

Please keep those info and articles coming. I am getting better with Google translate .. Really appreciate that.

The next financial year of the Company will be for a period of 18 months from 1 January 2020 until 30 June 2021. The change in the financial year end is to facilitate better audit planning and allocation of resources as well as to avoid the peak financial reporting period of 31 December.

Thanks. I have been following their development progress and hope they succeed.

The road is rocky and winding from RnD to commercialisation especially mass production including product stability and durability. Big giant steps.

When the rubber meets the road ..

Don't forget those products being developed need to run on possibly the same equipment hence competing with customer's orders for the same "air time" ie capacity. EDA can only achieve so much.

I am trying to balance with SilTerra the pure play foundary vs the products being developed.

Few months ago the government of the day just renewed the trade facilitation contract and as i mentioned since its a monopoly they can't replace. Just like many other government systems in JPJ, NRD etc that are outsourced to other parties.

Comments on @azee post wrt article titled "Technology Industry"

Note that the term technology is very wide and the article focus mainly on E&E electronics and electrical which account to almost 30% of our GDP overtaking petroleum. (note I too malas to dig out the accurate facts it's agak-agaklogy but inclined to actual data).

Even in the mid 80 the electronics industry was responsible for workforce of almost 250K both direct and indirect (suppliers, etc)

How did that happen? we have to be thankful to the late Tun Lim Chong Eu who mooted the idea of the FTZ following the revoking of free port status for Penang after Gerakan then opposition won control of the state government.

Imagine for those who are familiar with Penang Island the famous snake temple was next to the sea! Today the sea from the temple is a few km away as land was reclaimed and factories built there.

As more and more factories are set up some enterprising local companies started providing services as well as modifying equipment for the MNCs. Not all are semiconductor. There were companies making medical supplies, stereo (famous blaupunkt) etc.

There is a famous story of how a small shop selling and repairing bicycle became a force today in providing services and equipment to the MNCs. You can read through that post. Others were started by staff of those MNCs who leave to start their own.

The can-do spirit of the locals are not restricted to the entrepreneurs. The staff of the MNCs are often ranked as the best for that enterprise world-wide as often these MNCs have operations world-wide.

These staff either moved up the hierarchy or were sent to overseas operations all over often to start-up.

There was a bad joke that if a plane was to crashed - the airport is nearby - there will be a world wide shortage of computers as Intel and AMD were on either side of the Tun Azlan Shah Highway. HP printers were designed in that vicinity in the 80s as were motorola handphone and telecommunications equipment.

And that trajectory continued with more plants opening up across the bridge in Prai and further afield in Kulim. WD has i think about 9 buildings of which half was from the old Seagate.

Anyway I hope you enjoy this pisang goreng kopi-o tea time story. Apologise for certain inaccuracies and omission ...

ps maybe another time I will cerita the E&E in the Klang Valley ...

I agree with @Trevor777 in that you will not see SilTerra's impact on the financials at least for the next 2 quarters.

I like the optimism forecasted by Mr Gerard and Mr Feng and wish that they come true. However I will like to urge caution as we need to dive in a bit more about wafer fab manufacturing and processing to view those numbers more accurately.

I am no expert but there are some tough challenges in terms of scheduling and equipment utilisation.

For one thing I am unable to reconcile is the claim that equipment running at 91% when a previous statement by Tan Sri put it at 60%. However I am sure the group CFO who is from Moto and OnSemi? will be able to digest some of those data.

A guarded optimist.

True in the case of SilTerra but let's not generalise the tech sector and let's give some credits to our local talents.

Our OSATs, EMS and equipment and component makers are world class, Their products and engineers are exported all over the world including China, Taiwan and HKG. That is because of our "tradition" in that space and the eco-system built over the years.

For example Intel has large assembly and test facilities here in Penang Island and Kulim. Western Digital has gobbled up so many buildings besides their own.

On DNeX's fourth LOB of IT Services including Trade Mitigation

Their main earner for the entire corporation is the National Single Window or EDI to older people like me.

Contract is renewed as they are the sole provider - remember they got hit with a fine from the anti-monopoly commission (should do the same to TNB and the likes).

DNeX also announced their intention to reduce the dependency on this segment for revenue.

https://www.theedgemarkets.com/article/dnex-reduce-dependency-national-single-window (26 Jan 2021)

There are plenty of opportunities both horizontal and vertical to complement the NSW.

Perhaps - hint hint - Tan Sri has a change of mind given his comments in the e-logistics event in July.

I think it deemed further exploration.

People who posts here have to realise the semiconductor industry and its applications is very very wide and diverse.

Most comments are quite generic and not in many ways related to SilTerra. Thereby - other than stalkers - a lot of static is generated.

I hope I do not offend anyone by pointing out some instances.

Comments with regards to chip prices and stocks in relation to bitcoin mining. This applies to GPU (graphic processing unit) in which there are less than five players.

There was another one in reference to working from home (reducing) thereby reducing demands and impacting some of the local OSATs.

That is in a way true as there is a forecasted glut in PC chips. Note that bulk of SilTerra's products are not in this area.

BTW some type of chips have a 20 weeks delivery time. That's 5 months. So it pays to be a niche player.

In term for wafer fab production - #1 and @2 are pretty generic and widespread in products. #3 trying to figure out. #4 and #5 makes very specific or niche chips - just like SilTerra.

Also note that our local OSATs are mostly generic assemblers which means they can assemble and test chips from various industry (maybe not military grade but I could be wrong). So if there is a glut in PC chips they may acquire customers from a different segment of industry.

A poor analogy will be sawmill or wood finishing. They can cut logs into any measurement and cut them into any shape. So long as its wood.

So stay the course, don't panic. Let DMeX management sort out the issues at SilTerra and as one article few months back stated DNeX is not going to throw away RM900M of investment. No one does that especially when the rewards are immense and things are running (not a start-up).

I do not agree with your number of trade facilitation contributing 1% of revenue. Maybe just maybe many years from now.

Trade facilitation to DNeX include a monopoly of port clearances electronic documentation and interchange. After all DNeX was originally DagangNet and prior to that EDI Malaysia.

DNeX also signed a recent agreement for regional single window trade facilitation with CCB, etc. This should complement China's Belt and Road as well as whatever and whenever activities related to ECRL / ports / access for indonesia etc .. There are many areas where they can expand SEALnet ..

So i guess it all depends on how Tan Sri and his team executes the initiatives and opportunities.

There are very few makers of wafer fab production equipment in the world and all of them have orders backlogged for few years. Furthermore most of the assembly tests operations whether owned by principals or outsource are in the Far East. Is the US looking to build those there as well?

I am not too excited with Foxconn's involvement.

There is ample demand from customers beside Foxconn as the market is there. SilTerra just need to ensure that they can deliver on time at their maximum capacity and utilisation of equipment. Its work-in-progress judging by various reports.

no one can help except the new management and team. Hire if needed. No sacred cows.

New products and eco-system is nice to have but not necessary at this juncture.

Foxconn and Hon Hai's expertise lies in PCB, SMT and other board and device assembly. Not wafer fab or even assembly and test. Although fast few years Foxconn has moved into those areas.

Let's hope Foxconn does not throw their weight around and demand a huge chunks of SilTerra's monthly wafer starts capacity for their OSAT outsourced assembly and test partners.

Demand for semiconductors over the past 18 months or more have outstripped supply resulting in production being "on allocation" basis.

It may be a nice problem to have but not prudent and customers have memories. Pardon intended.

No point getting those certification or creating an ecosystem if you cannot get the products out of the door and billed to customers.

SilTerra need to get their capacity and on-time-delivery act right first. Those are the basics of any semiconductor company,

There are ample demands without looking at the EV crystal ball. Open up any car or TV or electric equipment and you see chips, chips and more chips.

So just focus on getting things right, people in place and house in order for next few quarters.

DNex owner of DagangNet goes back a long long way in the implementation of custom clearance based on EDI electronic document interchange technologies. I think this goes back when Rafidah was in Miti.

For EDI to work you will need a electronic mailbox as messages (transactions) are forwarded and retrieved - just like your email.

I believe some new players are coming in especially with the so called front-end and DNex is stalling. I recall reading something about that sometimes back.

A bad example will be a new taxi or bus coming trying to get on the highway (DagangNet) and not allowed to get in.

I don't think I am very far out with the above assumptions.

For those who have been following DNex I believe the company has been diversifying to OnG for past year or so.
