World’s Most Vaccinated Nation Reintroduces Curbs as Cases Surge

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-05-04/world-s-most-vaccinated-nation-reintroduces-curbs-as-cases-surge

Seychelles, which has fully vaccinated more of its population against Covid-19 than any other country, has closed schools and canceled sporting activities for two weeks as infections surge.

The measures, which include bans on the intermingling of households and the early closure of bars, come even as the country has fully vaccinated more than 60% of its adult population with two doses of coronavirus vaccines. The curbs are similar to those last imposed at the end of 2020.

“Despite of all the exceptional efforts we are making, the Covid-19 situation in our country is critical right now with many daily cases reported last week,” Peggy Vidot, the nation’s health minister, said at a press conference Monday.

There has been precious little news out of North Korea about the state of coronavirus pandemic in the country, but Hyonhee Shin reports for Reuters that state media warned this morning of the prospect of a lengthy battle against Covid, saying vaccines developed by global drugmakers were proving to be “no universal panacea”.

The Rodong Sinmun, the official newspaper of the ruling Workers’ Party, said the pandemic was only worsening, despite the development of vaccines.

“Novel coronavirus vaccines introduced competitively by various countries were once regarded as a glimmer of hope for humanity that could end the fight against this frightening disease,” it added.

“But the situations in many countries are clearly proving that the vaccines are never a universal panacea,” it said, citing news reports of rising numbers of new cases overseas and safety concerns.

It urged people to brace for a protracted pandemic, describing it as an “inevitable reality

PETALING JAYA: The move to get a new investor that will provide a loan for Thai AirAsia (TAA) is positive but it may come at a cost to AirAsia Group Bhd (AAGB).

AAGB may have to recognise large previously unrecognised loss of about RM500mil in financial year 2022, exacerbating its already negative book value per share, according to Maybank Investment Bank Research.

The research house’s view is that a rights issue was inevitable and is maintaining its estimates for now pending the listing of TAA.

Last week, it was announced that an unnamed investor will inject about RM412mil into AAGB’s 45% owned associate, TAA.

If TAA is listed on the Stock Exchange Of Thailand (SET), the convertible loan or bond is convertible into TAA shares at 20.39 baht per share.

Cambodia reported a daily record of 730 new coronavirus cases, the health ministry said in a statement on Sunday, as the country struggles to contain a wave of infections that emerged about two months ago.

Reuters reports:

The Southeast Asian nation has recorded one of the world’s smallest COVID-19 caseloads, but the recent outbreak that was first detected in late February has caused infections to climb to 14,520, with 103 deaths.

On Sunday Cambodia’s Communicable Disease Control Department posted a statement on Facebook:

Covid 19 continues to threaten us. Please continue to be vigilant by practicing hygiene, keep social distancing and don’t leave your house as it is spreading severely in the community in our country, our neighbours and the world.

The capital Phnom Penh, which has the most COVID-19 cases in the country, is under lockdown until May 5 and has declared some districts “red zones”, banning people from leaving their homes except for medical reasons.
