SINGAPORE (July 28): Singapore Airlines has reported a 180% surge in earnings, to $257 million, for the quarter ended June 30. This was largely due to cheaper fuel, and a share of the divestment gain from its aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul subsidiary SIA Engineering Co.

For 1Q17, the group's operating profit was 74% higher than the year before, at $193 million. Group revenue for the period was 2% lower, at $3.65 billion. The group spent $357 million less on fuel, as jet fuel prices as well as hedging losses were lower than in the year before.
