INVESTING in warrants is often seen as a risky activity – but then, the same can also be said of equities.

As Kenanga Investment Bank Bhd equity derivatives head Philip Lim points out, there is that mistaken perception that the trading of warrants can be “dangerous”.

“With products such as warrants, the initial perception is that they are dangerous and more risky (than equities). But with anything, we need to go into it with our eyes open,” he tells StarBizWeek.

“It’s like a knife. You can use it like an artform or to cook – but use it wrongly and it can be dangerous.”

To eliminate the perception that warrants are not a favourable means of investment, Kenanga Investment Bank Bhd will be rolling out a warrants trading challenge in collaboration with Singapore-based financial technology company, TradeHero.

Called the NagaWarrants Warrior Challenge, the campaign kicks off on Oct 4 and ends on Nov 11. Kenanga Investment Bank executive director and equity broking head Lee Kok Khee says the aim is to target millennials, primarily young executives.

“We did a survey and found that many of them are not investing in the market. It’s because they think they need a lot of money to invest.

“Secondly, there’s the lament that there is a lack of useful, actionable information. And thirdly, they are not comfortable trading, so we felt we needed to address this.”

Supported by Bursa Malaysia Bhd, AirAsia Bhd, Atlan Holdings Bhd and webe digital Sdn Bhd (formerly known as Packet One Networks Sdn Bhd), the challenge gives participants RM1mil in virtual cash to buy and sell structured warrants, issued by Kenanga.

The top three performing traders with the highest total value of portfolio and cash combined will win prizes ranging from RM6,288 cash, roundtrip AirAsia X premium flatbed tickets, Huawei mobile phone and webe data plans.

There will also be weekly prizes up for grabs, where participants can also earn extra virtual cash up to RM100,000 by fulfilling the NagaWarrants Warrior Challenge’s offers.

Apart from helping potential investors, the game also has the potential to benefit Kenanga’s own remisiers, says Kok Khee.

It’s also a tool for our remisiers to generate more trade because they can use it to service the customers better.”

Kenanga is already well established as a brokerage that organises virtual trading games – having held its second KenTrade Trading Challenge last year with resounding success.

“The original challenge two years back attracted 12,000 participants. Last year, we saw 18,000 people taking part.”

Kok Khee is a bit more conservative with this year’s challenge, seeing that it is focused on warrants.

“If it were an equity-based challenge, we would be expecting more this year – over 20,000. But with warrants, we’re targeting between 8,000 and 10,000 participants.”

Kenanga is planning its third KenTrade challenge soon after its NagaWarrants Warrior Challenge.

Unlike the KenTrade challenges, where participants traded virtually using their desktops and laptops, the NagaWarrants Warrior Challenge can be played using your smartphones, which provided more mobility and convenience for the virtual investors.

“Last year, you do it using a laptop and desktop. But these things are heavy and you only draw in people that are somewhat trading in the market.

“But by gamifying it and making it simpler, and delivering it on a smartphone platform, it’s our objective to reach out to more people,” says Kok Khee.

Lim concurs that the NagaWarrants Warrior Challenge is a great opportunity for Kenanga to introduce the warrants platform to a new segment of investors.

“What we’re targeting is a new segment of investors that do not understand this financial product very well, so we will provide them with the tools for them to trade.”

TradeHero is a virtual trading app that uses real time data, making it easier to learn about trading through a fun and intuitive platform.

Since it was first established in 2012, they have recorded more than seven million downloads globally. TradeHero is partnered with, and jointly developed by Ayondo – an innovative London FCA-regulated social trading platform.

Having partnered with Kenanga in the past, TradeHero chief technology officer and co-founder Dominic Morris says it was only natural to tie up with the brokerage to conceptualise the NagaWarrants Warrior Challenge.

“It’s a great way to educate people on what warrants are,” Morris says, adding that he is optimistic about the take-up for the challenge.

Despite the weaker economic climate currently, Kok Khee believes that there is no better time than to launch the challenge now.

“We believe this is the best time to reach out to potential investors. You don’t just go to the market when it’s busy with activities and full of people.

“People are looking for something to invest in and this is a good avenue, and what more when you can win prizes without spending anything.”

Lim says with the current climate, why not invest in
