I'm just posting it to keep everyone on their toes as I got this from my broker. There will be volatility come next week. for now, it looks like most indexes are moving up with Gold & Silver coming down from a good run-up. Definitely a good signal that, hopefully, that there'll be a rebound tonight. Most US indexes are now positive, except for Nasdaq.

Aside from United States’ presidential election on November 8, there are other elections coming up worldwide. We must look globally, and question the state of the international economy as it responds to political upheaval. To a great degree, that outlook isn’t very promising. A big surprise – like the election of Donald Trump in the US – could cause the various stock markets to crash and perhaps bring on a worldwide recession.

We must focus on long-term economic trends in both the US and international markets. This will help us keep the short-term ramifications in perspective and aid us in avoiding rash decisions. Right now we've got a lot of uncertainty, which is one thing the markets hate. Beware: markets could be in for a bumpy ride for the next few days.

With a week to go until the U.S. elections, two questions are being asked by everyone: “Who will win?” and “How will the elections affect me?”

On the surface, the first question seems to be the easiest to answer. Currently, the London odds makers are making Hillary Clinton the 3-1 favorite. However, about a week before the Brexit vote, similar odds favored the “no” vote, and we know what happened there. Just last week, the odds were quoted at 6-1 for Hillary. Clearly, this is an election like no other. With the FBI groping for answers about Hillary Clinton’s private server, and Donald Trump boasting of, well, groping women’s privates, this election has provided what Americans refer to as an “October surprise” at least twice a day.

The latest bombshell, that the FBI is investigating Clinton’s e-mail use, was released this past Friday. Will this news impact the presidential election? “Early voting” in various states has allowed millions of voters across the country to already cast their ballots, which would seem to favor Clinton no matter what is uncovered. But the Democrats are counting on a high Election Day turnout, and the enthusiasm for Hillary might be greatly diminished with this breaking news. If the Obama coalition, specifically Black voters, stay home on Election Day, it could be catastrophic for her.

As far as the polls go, many pundits suggest that Trump’s supporters are undercounted by the pollsters because they are keeping their support secret, so the polls aren’t an accurate reflection of his chances. In fact, in many circles, Trump supporters are ostracized.

On a superficial level, the stock market appears to be strong when Clinton surges in the polls. Billionaire businessman Mark Cuban, for one, thinks the stock market will crash if Trump is elected. The knee-jerk reaction to a Trump victory would be an immediate Wall Street sell-off. This is based on the way the market moved during presidential debates and when negative news was released affecting each candidate (note, no positive news is ever released), as the candidates’ odds shifted every minute. On the other hand, the gold market, the traditional safe haven, seems to rally when there is a resurgence in Trump support.

Conventional wisdom says that a Clinton administration will be bullish for petroleum products and natural gas because it will likely mean an increase in energy regulations that will increase production costs. Hillary has suggested that she would retain the Obama Environmental Protection Agency policies, which would limit the production of fossil fuels, particularly coal. A Trump administration would work for fewer regulations, thereby lowering costs for energy production. It has been said that Hillary is pro-fracking, and that may be true. However, the progressive wing of her party could have increasing influence if the Democrats win big. This wing of the party demands a ban on fracking and that would cause the price of crude oil and natural gas to rise.

Trump has complained that the Federal Reserve is holding interest rates artificially low, creating asset bubbles in various markets. He has indicated that he plans to replace the Fed’s chair, Janet Yellen, who has been maintaining the low rates. If rates indeed go up during a Trump administration, that would be good for the dollar. Also good for the dollar, at least in the near term, would be the uncertainty associated with a Trump victory.

A President Trump would likely threaten open markets and free trade. Trump has proposed punitive tariffs of 45 percent on all Chinese imports to the US, raising fears of retaliation by the Chinese. If a trade war develops between these two super-economies, there could be serious global repercussions. Trump has also said that he would demand the renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) with Canada and Mexico. In that eventuality, the US dollar would likely be stronger against the currencies of these countries.

If Democrat Hillary Clinton wins the election, the most likely result is that it’s going to be considered business as usual, as there will be continuity with the existing Obama administration. As a result, we might expect a Clinton relief rally in the stock market. Actually, on an historical basis, the average stock market returns are highest when there is a Democratic President and Senate, and a Republican Congress. This very well might be the result of this year’s election, as people may vote for Clinton by default. Many don’t trust her, and will split their ticket, to check and balance her power.

the above course will teach you basic, intermediate & advanced techniques & will be suitable for stock/forex or any other instruments traded on the exchanges. its worth every penny that you invest into the course. FYI, I'm not Ezikiel's agent nor do I get any commission for recommending him. I'm merely spreading by word of mouth of someone that can help each individual immensely if you want to master stock/forex trading.

ngwt, i recommend that you go for a stock/forex trading course where i went. Ezikiel is really very good and view his weekly analysis videos on his website (http://www.asiaforexmentor.com/weekly-forex-trading-analysis/).' target='_blank'>http://www.asiaforexmentor.com/weekly-forex-trading-analysis/). He's based in S'pore. See http://www.asiaforexmentor.com/ for more info. I attended his training course this March & have learnt a lot from him as well as go thru his weekly analysis videos for more insight. Its all about knowing the main indicators such as 120BB, 20BB, 10/25/150/365 EMA, MACD, but I also use Stochastics & RSI too.

If, and ONLY if the US market bounces back strongly tonight, expect HSI to make a good gain tomorrow. will update later tonight once I see which direction indexes are heading. I've kept my small amount of C48.

Stock

2016-11-02 16:38 | Report Abuse

for newbies who are not aware, HSI trades during its 3rd session from 5:15pm (after KLCI has closed) up to nearly midnight. The index follows whichever direction most other stock market indexes are moving (at most times). If you expect US markets, esp DJI, to have a good day & end up higher than where its current index is, although its current futures may be negative, then if you are holding 'C', expect its price to open higher than today's close, and if you are holding 'H' then expect its price to be lower than today's close. And if DJI index closes below its current level than expect the reverse. hope its clear. You decide on your own risk appetite what to do before KLCI closes.
