Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine deliveries could start 'before Christmas
Nov 19): Pfizer Inc and BioNTech could secure emergency U.S. and European authorization for their COVID-19 vaccine next month after final trial results showed it had a 95% success rate and no serious side effects, the drugmakers said on Wednesday.
The vaccine's efficacy was found to be consistent across different ages and ethnicities - a promising sign given the disease has disproportionately hurt the elderly and certain groups including Black people.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration could grant emergency-use by the middle of December, BioNTech Chief Executive Ugur Sahin told Reuters TV. Conditional approval in the European Union could be secured in the second half of December, he added.
"If all goes well I could imagine that we gain approval in the second half of December and start deliveries before Christmas, but really only if all goes positively," he said.

The company said none of the trial participants reported any adverse reactions or side effects.
Its vaccines have also been approved for emergency use in China, the UAE and Bahrain involving more than a million frontliners, said GI Healthcare Resources.
"More than 60,000 personnel who have been vaccinated have gone to work in more than 180 countries overseas without a single reported case of Covid-19 infection," it added.
GI Healthcare Resources claimed that based on the examples above, Sinopharm's vaccine effectiveness is close to 100%.
"Of the 99 employees in Huawei's Mexico office, 81 were vaccinated and 18 were not vaccinated. After the outbreak, none of the 81 vaccinated employees were infected, whereas 10 out of the 18 employees who were not vaccinated were diagnosed to be Covid-19 positive," it added.
The company said Sinopharm's vaccines are leading in terms of safety, effectiveness, and accessibility, as they can be stored and transported at temperatures ranging between 2°C and 8°C, which they claim is far more practical and convenient compared with vaccines by other pharmaceutical firms, which may face storage and logistical issues.
"This will enhance the assessment process for registration of the vaccine in Malaysia," it added.

PETALING JAYA: The construction sector will benefit from the 38% jump in Budget 2021 development expenditure allocation to RM69bil although concerns about execution risks and political uncertainties remain, according to research analysts.
Maybank Investment Bank (IB) Research said it remained positive on the construction sector, as the surge in gross development expenditure presents sizeable order book replenishment opportunities to contractors over the medium term.
The research unit said the construction sector’s real output is expected to expand by 13.9% in 2021, after an anticipated 18.7% fall in 2020.

Finance minister: GLCs need to help restart Malaysia’s economy and create jobs, not slow down investments
KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 1 — Government-linked companies (GLCs) should step up now to help drive Malaysia’s economy amid the Covid-19 pandemic by spending and investing more in projects and creating jobs, instead of cutting back on investments, Finance Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz has said.
In an interview with local daily Sinar Harian published today, Tengku Zafrul said that the government currently needs support from the private sector, GLCs and government-linked investment companies (GLICs), urging GLC and GLIC leaders to change their mindset due to the pressure on the economy and the difficulties faced by the public.
“The government will do what it can but GLCs and GLICs also need to help restart the economy, create job opportunities and so on. I’m confident that such efforts will help the country a lot,” he was quoted as saying by the paper.

Finance minister: Budget 2021 to be bigger than Budget 2020, govt will not reduce projects but will spend more to ‘restart’ Malaysia’s economy
Sunday, 01 Nov 2020 11:24 AM MYT
KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 1 — The Malaysian government intends to spend more money next year with Budget 2021 expected to have a bigger allocation than Budget 2020, in order to create more jobs and to “restart” Malaysia’s economy, Finance Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz has said.
In an interview with Malay-language paper Sinar Harian, Tengku Zafrul said he could not reveal the figure for Budget 2021 which will be tabled in Parliament next Friday, but confirmed that the expected government expenditure amount for the year 2021 would be more than the amount allocated in Budget 2020.
When asked if the government would cut back on spending for development projects under Budget 2021, Tengku Zafrul said the government instead intends to spend more on such development projects next year, while saving money on operation costs.

Budget 2021: Construction industry hopes to play key role in Malaysia’s economic recovery, says senior minister
KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 31 — The Works Ministry hopes that the construction industry will continue to receive attention in Budget 2021 and be the core of the government’s efforts to restore the country’s economy in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Senior Works Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said major construction projects such as the Mass Rapid Transit Line 3 (MRT3), East Coast Rail Link (ECRL), High-Speed Rail (HSR) and Pan Borneo as well as several highway projects should run smoothly and serve as a catalyst for the growth of the construction industry.
He also hoped that Budget 2021 would give attention to certain high-priority projects, such as the remaining packages for the Central Spine Road (CSR) and Jalan Kota Bharu-Kuala Krai projects that have not yet been approved, namely the route between Kuala Krai to Gua Musang as well as alignment connecting Bentong to Karak.
