He obtained his accounting qualification from Chartered Institute of Management Accountants, UK in 1990, followed by a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Oklahoma City University, USA in 1995. He is currently pursuing his Doctorate in Business Administration (PHD) on a part-time basis with University of Malaya.

He is a public practicing Auditor and a licensed liquidator. He also participates in community services and in charity fund raising activities. He is a member of the Malaysian Institute of Accountants, a Fellow member of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (United Kingdom), a Fellow member of the Certified Public Accountant (Australia), an associate member of the Institute of Internal Auditors Malaysia, a Fellow member of Malaysia Institute of Taxation and a member of Malaysia Institute of Directors.
He is the co-founder of Cheng & Co (Chartered Accountants) in early 1993. Currently, he is the Managing Partner of the Cheng & Co (Chartered Accountants) and Managing Director of the Cheng & Co and Corporate Recovery Sdn. Bhd. He also sits on the board of several related companies as a director. He is also appointed as Audit committee member of the Malaysian Red Crescent and as a trustee of Real Foundation
