Dato’ Dr. Lukman started his career with Sun Refining and Marketing, Philadelphia, U.S.A. in 1989 prior to joining Automotive Corporation (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd. in 1990. He joined Proton Berhad in 1991 and built his career in automotive industry with Proton for 17 years. During his tenure with Proton, he was seconded to Proton Part Centre Sdn Bhd in 1993 for two years. He was then seconded to PHN Industry Sdn Bhd with his last position as the Managing Director.

In 2008, he joined DRB-HICOM Berhad as the Group Chief Financial Officer. He was later promoted to Group Chief Operating Officer in 2011. In 2012, Dato’ Dr. Lukman was entrusted the position of Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Proton Holdings Berhad, a position which he held until 2014.
