From 1975 to 1978, he served as an Assistant Director in the Ministry of International Trade and Industry ( "MITI"). He then served in the Permanent Mission of Malaysia in Geneva from 1978 to 1981. He was the Malaysian Trade Commissioner to the Philippines and Thailand from 1981 to 1987 and 1987 to 1991 respectively. Before Dato' Mohd Haniff assumed the post of Director of Trade Promotion of Malaysian External Trade Development Corporation in MITI from 1993 to 1994, he was the Director of Malaysian Export Trade Centre in MITI.
