KUALA LUMPUR (May 3): Sunway Group partners with Petroliam Nasional Bhd's (Petronas)subsidiary Gentari Sdn Bhd, and EV Connection Sdn Bhd to build and install electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at Sunway-owned premises, commercial buildings and facilities throughout the country.

In this tri-partied partnership agreement, Gentari’s unit, Gentari Green Mobility Sdn Bhd, will co-develop EV charging stations at Sunway’s integrated townships and developments throughout Malaysia.

EV Connection will work with Sunway to identify strategic locations for the installation of the charging stations at Sunway’s integrated townships and developments throughout Malaysia to reduce range anxiety, the companies said in a joint statement on Wednesday (May 3).

Sunway said this partnership is a step towards the government’s stated goal of being a carbon-neutral economy by 2050.

Since 2015, Sunway has fully embraced the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN-SDGs) and pledged to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, in line with the national climate agenda.

“EVs are increasingly the preferred option among Malaysians. The growing number of EVs will require a robust network of charging stations throughout the country,” said Tan Sri Jeffrey Cheah, who also chairs the Malaysian chapter of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Solutions Network (UN-SDSN).

Under the government’s Low Carbon Mobility Blueprint 2021-2023, Malaysia aims to have EVs and hybrid vehicles account for at least 15% of the total industry volume by 2030.

In addition, the government is targeting to have 10,000 EV charging stations nationwide by 2025.
