Snapchat’s ‘crying face filter’ takes over social media
Is Snapchat making a comeback with its new crying face filter? It appears so. The videos of users crying tears - thanks to augmented reality technology - have taken flight on TikTok, and all over social media.
But before we get into the fun of this filter, despite the rumours and popular belief, according to TMZ, the cry face filter was not inspired by actress Amber Heard. She recently offered a tearful testimony in court recently against ex-husband Johnny Depp.
According to Mashable, it’s currently the most popular filter on TikTok and has been all the rage since it dropped.
So, you’re probably asking yourself what’s so great about this filter and how it works? That’s simple enough.
Once the filter is activated on Snapchat, the augmented reality lens will configure anyone’s natural facial expression to one that’s hilariously sad. The effect transforms even the most composed faces into one that has reached an emotional breaking point and it turns the user into a blubbering mess.
When you say blubbering mess, what does that mean exactly?
According to Mashable, the filter gives you sad, upturned eyebrows, bloodshot eyes, an exaggerated frown, and a few unshed tears. It’s got the kids hooked, as lots of these videos that were taken to TikTok have now gone viral.
The filter even turned into a prank as users fool their friends by showing an unsuspecting person doing just about anything and minding their business. The user behind the camera asks, “What’s wrong?” while the victim is confused. But on camera, the filter transforms their face into an inconsolable, crying mess. It’s also being used in media such as celebrity interviews, movies, and television shows.

The filter has gotten so big that the hashtag “crying filter” now has over 76 million views on TikTok.
Regarding how successful this filter has been, Snapchat may have a chance at revitalising its platform after all.
