KHARTOUM, Sept. 20 -- Sudan's health ministry on Tuesday reported five new cases of monkeypox in the country, raising the nationwide caseload to seven.

"Two of the cases were recorded in West Darfur State, one in Khartoum State, one in Kassala State, and one in North Darfur State," Montasir Mohamed Osman, director of the general directorate of health emergency and epidemics control at the ministry, said in a statement.

"With the new cases, the total number of monkeypox cases in the country climbs to seven," he added.

Sudan announced the first confirmed case of monkeypox in the country in early August.
