ULAN BATOR, Aug. 15 -- At least 87 livestock were killed after a lightning strike in central Mongolia, the country's National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) reported on Wednesday.

The incident occurred in Khashaat soum, an administrative subdivision of Arkhangai province, on Tuesday, the NEMA said, adding that the sheep and goats, which perished in the lightning strike, belonged to a local herder household.

This summer, Mongolia has experienced numerous thunderstorms, resulting in significant damage. Last week, two people were fatally struck by lightning in the western province of Khovd, and in a separate incident, over 500 livestock from two herder households were killed in the central province of Uvurkhangai.

The emergency agency urged the public, especially nomadic herders, to avoid possible risks as thunderstorms are expected in the southern Gobi provinces and central provinces of the country in the coming days.
