Fed rate hike: US interest rates hit 14-year high in inflation battle
* By Natalie Sherman
* Business reporter, New York
21 September 2022, 19:01 BST
https://www.bbc.com/news/business-62973376.amp

The US central bank has pushed interest rates to the highest level in almost 15 years as it fights to rein in soaring prices in the world's largest economy.
The Federal Reserve announced it was raising its key rate by another 0.75 percentage points, lifting the target range to 3% to 3.25%.
Borrowing costs are expected to climb more - and remain high, the bank said.
The move comes despite mounting concern that the cost of controlling inflation could be a harsh economic downturn…

KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 4): Foreign shareholding in CIMB Group Holdings Bhd rose to 26.9% in August 2022, the highest on record since the Covid-19 pandemic's onset in April 2020, according to the banking group's latest update.

Elsewhere in Southeast Asia, Singapore has a “large representation” of companies — such as banks — that benefit from rising yields, said Raychaudhuri, adding that the country and India, Indonesia and Malaysia are “pockets of safety.”

Timothy Moe, chief Asia-Pacific equity strategist at Goldman Sachs, said there are three positive drivers for Southeast Asian markets.

Those include their delayed recovery from Covid, the emergence of a digital or “new” economy, and rising interest rates.

“Asean markets typically have a very high exposure to banks, and banks were not the place to be the last 10 years,” he told CNBC’s “Street Signs Asia” on Tuesday. “But they are now, with the interest rate cycle turning, and so that’s been a very significant tailwind for the Asean markets.”

Given the looming global downturn and political uncertainty on the local front, economists believe the stability of a new administration will augur well for the stock market.

Minority Shareholder Watch Group (MSWG) chief executive officer Devanesan Evanson said the stock markets prefer certainty and predictability.

Devanesan said this is because the markets tend to discount this uncertainty through stock prices.

NEW YORK (Oct 14): It’s hard to be sympathetic when bank bosses effectively complain that their businesses are too safe and sound, and that customers are too conservative. Yet for the big US lenders who reported third-quarter earnings on Friday, that’s the reality. JPMorgan, Wells Fargo and Citigroup have what might be thought of as first-world problems.

Banks, then, are not the likely source of the next financial crisis. But that just means the real systemic threats lurk out of sight. Britain’s recent pension-fund margin call mini-crisis read more was an example of risk that financial regulators didn’t see coming, because they weren’t looking in the right place. The quest for sturdy and thoroughly scrutinized banks has pushed hazardous behaviour into the shadows. That makes the lenders’ solid balance sheets feel like less of a victory.

KUALA LUMPUR: Higher interest rates and a firm economic recovery are likely to enhance Malaysian banks' revenue and profitability prospects, according to Fitch Ratings.

Credit impairments, however, were likely to rise but remain manageable, the firm added.

"These factors drove our recent revision of the operating environment score for the Malaysian banking sector to its pre-pandemic level of 'bbb+', from 'bbb', with a stable outlook," Fitch said in a report today.

“GE15 is drawing some funds (local and foreign) into the local market on expectations a big win for one of the parties could lead to a more stable leadership and better policy outcomes.

The fresh buying of local stocks by funds could be an early “window dressing” move triggered also by multi-year low valuations and underpinned by an improving domestic economic activity with Phua stating Phillip Research’s inhouse forecast is for the benchmark FBM KLCI to hit 1,571 points prior to Nov 19 (election day) as funds rotate money into sectors like banking and telecommunication companies from glove makers, oil and gas or even the technology counters.

I know this is a bit off topic, but has anyone noticed that the CIMB Clicks app, now mandatory for approving most online banking transactions in Malaysia, hangs a Samsung handphone's internet connection after a few hours? If I install the CIMB Clicks app and then just leave my telephone sitting idle for a while, the internet browser on the handphone won't respond to requests to display new pages. If I remove the CIMB Clicks app, everything returns to normal. Has anyone else noticed this?

1 month ago

stkoay

Not true.
I use a Samsung S20 and I use both CIMB Clicks & CIMB OCTO apps.

1 month ago

Valuvestor

Anyway, this is the response I received from CIMB when I lodged my complaint:

"RM0 RM0.00 CIMB: Ref to feedback: 1-13470750956, please be inform that the CIMBClicks Apps has no impact to the user internet connection. Should you have issues with internet connection, kindly refer to your internet / telco service provider for further "

When a user reports a problem, you do not go into denial. That's just a sure fire way of making sure that the problems accumulate.
