ASUNCION/SAO PAOLO (Nov 18): Paraguayan President Santiago Pena was in stable condition on Monday evening, after being hospitalised while attending the G20 summit in Brazil’s Rio de Janeiro, the hospital said.

Pena was admitted on Monday afternoon and submitted to some tests after experiencing "discomfort", Rio de Janeiro’s Samaritano hospital said in a statement.

"He is doing well; he’s being observed and waiting for results," Paraguay’s first lady Leticia Ocampos said on social media.

Earlier, Vice President Pedro Alliana said on social media that he had spoken with Pena, after the president experienced a "slight indisposition".

Pena, a 46-year-old economist from the South American nation’s conservative Colorado party, who took office in August 2023, had been attending the global leaders’ summit in neighbouring Brazil.

Shortly before his hospitalisation, Pena wrote on social media that he and his counterparts had discussed major global challenges, and shared images of himself sitting alongside leaders from Qatar and Nigeria.
