PUTRAJAYA: What lies ahead for Pas in terms of political alliances is still an open book for its Perikatan Nasional (PN) ally, Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu).

Asked on conflicting statements by Pas leaders on which bloc the Islamist party will work with during the 15th General Election (GE15), Bersatu chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said his party was not privy to Pas' internal matters.

"We are on the outside and do not know what is their real strategy… whether they plan to continue with Muafakat Nasional (MN) or otherwise.

"I cannot say anything based on the statements from Umno leaders. Even its president recently said it has come to a time where there is no need for MN," he said after chairing a National Recovery Council meeting at the Finance Ministry here today.

However, the former prime minister said Bersatu and PN would not stop its allies and members from forging alliances with other parties or blocs, primarily since it was centred on the spirit of Malay-Muslim unity.

Muhyiddin said that in a recent Hari Raya Aidilfitri gathering, Pas President Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang and secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan reassured him that they were still together with Bersatu in PN.

"But we will not stop them from making their own decisions. If there are efforts (to leave us), it's okay. At the end of the day, we will sit at the same table and discuss what is best for PN and the country.

"We will get the final word from them whether they are sticking with us or otherwise," the PN chairman added.

Earlier, Pas vice-president Datuk Seri Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar reportedly said the Malay-Muslim unity agenda is why the party would defend its relations with Umno through the MN pact.

He claimed the agenda, which was a mainstay in MN, was more significant than the survival or continuity of any particular political party.

Pejuang chairman Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad also claimed that Muhyiddin had met him seeking support to become prime minister again.

However, Dr Mahathir, who resigned as prime minister after the Sheraton Move in 2020, claimed he rejected the move.

Abdul Hadi is also seeking a meeting with Dr Mahathir to consolidate the party's position via a big tent bloc, including Pejuang.

The Sheraton Move saw Muhyiddin appointed as PM after Dr Mahathir lost his support and this triggered the collapse of the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government.
