Edible oil smuggling: Why use the army over a civil problem, Kadir Jasin asks PM

A FORMER Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) leader cautioned Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob over proposed use of the Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM) to curb the smuggling of subsidised oil.

“Ismail Sabri should be careful with this. We are not at war. Besides, this is a civil matter not insurrection.

“The Government must be careful when touching on certain sentiments. I hope the prime minister was misquoted by the media,” said A Kadir Jasin, in a Facebook post.

Yesterday, Ismail Sabri announced that he would draft the ATM to assist the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry and the police to raid errant edible oil packaging factories across the country to deter smuggling.

He added that the move would ensure that the subsidised edible oil worth RM4 bil reach the target group instead of being shipped away to other nations.

“And we will take stern action by cancelling the errant factories’ quotas and permits to ensure there are no more leakages,” Malaysia Gazette reported him as saying. – July 5, 2022
