PAS spiritual leader Datuk Hashim Jasin has dismissed the idea that the party will witness a split due to disagreements on whether it should maintain Muafakat Nasional (MN) or continue its political alliance with Perikatan Nasional (PN).

Any dissatisfaction among party members would be resolved easily, he told FMT.

He added that it was compulsory for members to adhere to any decision made by the party’s central leadership.

In the same vein Hashim acknowledged that PAS leaders were currently at adds on the status of the party’s collaboration with UMNO in MN as well as its membership in the Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin-led PN, with whom UMNO has severed ties.

The FMT report also noted that Hashim had rejected speculation that the differences between PAS leaders would lead to an exodus similar to the one that happened in 2015 when the so-called progressive faction of PAS departed from the pro-Islamic party to form Amanah.

According to the FMT report PAS Dewan Ulama leader Mokhtar Senik had recently ticked off several party members when he said that the move to maintain MN as well as strengthen ties within PN went against party president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang’s directive.

He said that Hadi had spoken of the need to maintain good relations with UMNO, and warned of a repeat of the 2015 incident if party members were insincere or were making moves behind the president’s back.

On this matter, Hashim pointed out that any PAS leader saying that the party should choose either MN or PN would be expressing their personal views rather than that of the party’s.

“PAS’ decision to strengthen MN and at the same time back PN remains. There is no issue of backing only PN or MN,” he stressed. – Aug 17, 2022
