The Gua Musang member of parliament said the split, which could be caused by vested interests, would only serve as a detriment as seen in the party's performance in Johor during the last general election.

"This is why Johor lost in the last general election.

"Such situations happen and it could be due to vested interests, causing lack of focus during the election," he told a press conference after attending the 24th general meeting of the West Malaysia Malay Teachers' Association (KGMMB) Cooperative Bhd held here last night.

He added that when former Umno president Datuk Seri Najib Razak was still in power, 13 parties supported the existing leadership back then, before Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi took over.

"We have not only lost at the central level but also in every state except Perlis and there are also divisions within Umno in the states.

"This matter (the divisions within the party) has not been resolved until now.

"We must always work for solidarity and unity among us so that no one can divide us.

"Umno's lifespan depends on the people. If the people still support it, it will continue to be upright, strong and powerful," he said.

At the same time, Tengku Razaleigh also expressed bewilderment on Umno deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hassan's recent announcement on plans by Barisan Nasional to go "solo" in the next election.

Tengku Razaleigh said he could not comprehend what was meant by "going solo" as recently said.

"BN has never "gone solo" as it is composed of different parties to move as a coalition.

"In the coalition, each component party brings with them their strength, to assist the candidates who offer to contest on behalf of their respective party using one logo, which is BN logo."
