AS Sultan Nazrin Shah of Perak chastised the existence of the corruption as an “elephant that is vividly happen(ing) before of our eyes”, the deafening silence from the MCA and MIC against corrupt practices by party leaders within the Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition is very disturbing indeed.

To rub salt to ‘malignant’ wounds, Deputy Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Ti Lian Ker went to the extent of questioning why there was no sympathy accorded to incarcerated ex-premier Datuk Seri Najib Razak especially among the Malay community and Muslims alike.

This comes after a backlash over allegations that the jailed former prime minister is receiving preferential treatment via the healthcare system.

In a Twitter post yesterday (Sept 22), Ti, who is also an MCA vice-president, said he did not understand why there was so much hate against politicians. Where is the culture of forgiveness of the Malays and Islam?” asked the 59 year-old Raub (Pahang)-born politician who was a three-term state assemblyman of Indera Mahkota (1995 and 1999) and Teruntum (2004).

“There are some who relentlessly want to see Najib be tortured and suffer in prison. Is it not enough to have his mind, body and spirit tortured?”

Doubtlessly, Ti’s Tweet attracted an array of brickbats after Malaysiakini aired his view under the headline “Where is the Islamic spirit of Forgiveness, Deputy Minister asks Najib Haters”.

In joining the chorus of people who criticised the ‘un-elected backdoor representative”, veteran lawmaker Lim Kit Siang said there is no need to ask MCA and MIC ministers/leaders the reasons for failing to condemn the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) scandal “as this is characteristic of these political parties”.

“If prison life is torture to ‘mind, body and spirit’, why has the MCA only spoken up now 65 years after Merdeka?” questioned the 81 year-old Iskandar Puteri MP. “The monstrous mega RM50 bil 1MDB scandal is an acid test whether a political party is for or against corruption and whether it is against Malaysia becoming a kleptocracy.”

The DAP supremo also took a swipe at UMNO president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi who recently chided former prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and former attorney-general Tan Sri Tommy Thomas for having “supreme difficulty in condemning the RM50 bil 1MDB scandal.

“Why is this so?” asked Kit Siang. “The UMNO president has said that UMNO is prepared to ‘wade in flood waters’ in the 15th General Election (GE15 but why has is he unable to condemn the 1MDB scandal? Is UMNO ‘wading in flood waters’ to defend corruption?”

In contrast, Kit Siang echoed the view of Sultan Nazrin who considered corruption a “disease” and “cancerous” outbreak within the society when launching the new book entitled Corruption and Hypocrisy in Malay Muslim Politics by Muslim academician and Islamic scholar Prof Tan Sri Kamal Hassan.

According to Sultan Nazrin, corruption works in such a way that it spreads little by little – enervating an organisational structure one by one – until it becomes paralysed if not immediately treated.

“Therefore, we cannot take it lightly, be complacent and choose to be in denial, conceiving all kinds of justification – performing mental acrobatics to deny the existence of the corruption ‘elephant’ that is vividly happening in front of our eyes,” he opined.

“An honest assessment of corruption should be mandatory – sincere and objective – based on facts as proof that we are truly serious in fighting and combatting even to the point of totally eliminating corruption” – Sept 23, 2022
