KUALA LUMPUR: Economists believe a cabinet reshuffle, which may happen after the state elections, will have little impact on the economy and investors' perception.

Putra Business School economic analyst Associate Professor Dr Ahmed Razman Abdul Latiff said a cabinet shuffle would affect the economy only if it caused delays in funds distribution for ongoing projects and initiatives.

"But in my opinion, a cabinet reshuffle will have very minimal impact on the economic sector and economic reforms. It will not hinder efforts to strengthen the economy," he told the New Straits Times today.

"A cabinet reshuffle is different from a change of government as it only involves the movement of a few people. So I don't see any significant impact coming from it."

It was reported that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim may reshuffle the cabinet after the state elections.

But a "clean-up" of senior civil servants was expected to be carried out first, a portal reported, quoting a well-placed PKR source.

Economist Professor Tan Sri Dr Noor Azlan Ghazali said changes in the cabinet would not have any affect on the country's economy.

He said a cabinet reshuffle would not be seen as a bad move for the country.

He said every ministry had a roadmap and masterplan, so a cabinet reshuffle would not have a significant impact on them.

"There should be a review of the roadmaps and masterplans for ministries instead of changing ministers.

"Review their status and improve, rather than throw out previous work."

Nusantara Academy for Strategic Research senior fellow Dr Azmi Hassan said the cabinet reshuffle would likely only involve underperforming ministers.

He said if there was a cabinet reshuffle, investors would look at what was changed.

He said if the reshuffle involved bringing in capable people, the exercise would have little impact on the country.

"Previously, Anwar had to consider party quotas in appointing the cabinet.

"But if the unity government sees landslide victories in state elections, there won't be uproar if he puts in capable ministers without adhering to party quotas."
